Just as I wrote yesterday about the famous male quintet of the late sixties/early seventies, there were also main female actresses/singers who entertained the Konkani speaking masses in Goa, Bombay and abroad through their participation in tiatros. They were, to name a few, Shalini, Filomena, Ophelia, Antonette, Betty Fernandes, Betty Naz and Jessie Dias. These females are based in Bombay except for Jessie Dias and Mary Vaz who reside in Goa. All of these females have done a great service to Goan stage and culture, which cannot be repaid in any form. Nevertheless, it would be great if all of them were recognized in some way or another.

And, of course, there are many more that rose to fame in later years. Let us keep in mind that we are talking of only “Tiatros” at this point and not “Khell-Tiatros”, which actually, ultimately overpowered and overtook the former (thanks to late Rosario Rodrigues for the introduction of Non-Stop Khell-Tiatro on stage), but that does not mean that we should forget the old and patronize only the new. They too will get their turn when the time is ripe, and make them eligible for recognition. What we are trying to do now is to convey a message to the Goa government so that a system is devised whereby all of our actors and actresses, writers and directors, whether old or new, would be eligible for recognition by the Goa government without any prerequisites (certificate of permanent residence in Goa) as introduced by today’s wise, leading politicians in Goa.

Here we have another rather tricky issue pertaining to one of the above actresses – Betty Naz. During the above-cited period (late sixties/early seventies), the famous male quintet I wrote about yesterday split for some reason, and the usual dirty term “Tem/to aslear, aum/ami nachonant” began playing major role. C. Alvares did not agree with the term. So, he walked out of the group and joined other artistes like Bab Peter, Joe Rose, Rico Rod, Seby Coutinho, etc. In the process, Ophelia and Jessie Dias also joined him. Thus, there was a shortage of female actresses in the original group and this is where Betty Naz filled in. Being a Mangalorean, Betty initially had a little problem with Goan dialect but she quickly made up for the deficiency and went on to become one of the finest actresses and singers of the Goan stage. She has been in the limelight of Goan stage for over three decades and has won the praise and admiration of the public in Goa, Bombay and abroad. However, she is neither a Goan by birth nor does she have a residence in Goa. So, where does she fit? Can she ever hope to be recognized by the Goa government for her contribution to Goan stage/culture?
