GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 07 Nov 2003 TWO DEAD IN FACTORY EXPLOSION: NORWEGIAN ENGR KILLED: Two persons including a Norwegian engineer Edwin Sordbu (56) were killed yesterday in a major blast during erection of a plant at Navelim-Sankhali in Bicholim taluka. The two were testing a chemical process involving and explosive. Though the cause of the blast at Amitech Pipes System India Pvt Ltd yesterday morning at 11.15 am is not known, fire brigade sources said it could be due to sudden rise in temperature while the process of mixture preparation was in progress at the unit. GOA RECORDS 12 PC REVENUE GROWTH: Goa has performed exceedingly well in revenue generation as well as expenditure in the first six months of the budgetary period from March to September 2003. A 12 per cent growth has been recorded in this term. Projections indicate that the state will generate an additional revenue of Rs.241 crore by the end of the current financial year. It is expected that as against a total revenue collection of Rs.1350 crore in the previous financial year, a sum of Rs.1590 crore will be collected in the current year. (GT) BRIBERY CASE ENDS IN A WHIMPER: The Khemlo Sawant bribery case, which created ripples in Goa's political circles two years ago after the BJP accused the Congress of trying to form a government through bribery and defections, failed to stand in the court of law. Both the Congress activists-Khemlo Sawant (27) and Deepak Parab (34), who were arrested and chargesheeted in this case by the CID, Anti-Corruption branch, upon a complaint by Sanvordem MLA Vinay Tendulkar, stand discharged. (H) 'URBAN' RATES IRK SIOLIM TELEPHONE USERS: At a well attended meeting of the Siolim Citizens Welfare Committee held recently at St Francis Xavier's High School complex in Siolim's the problem of billing the telephone users in Siolim village the urban rental rate of Rs.250 per month by Goa Telecom was discussed and unanimously condemned as a 'grave injustice'. Siolim is a village, with a panchayat body to look after its needs and welfare; hence it is rural rental rates that should apply, states a press note signed by Joint Secretary Clare D'Souza. (GT) CRACKDOWN ON ERRING TAXIS: The Department of Transport, Government of Goa, is to commence a drive from Friday against tourist taxis failing to follow the prescribed fare structure and fleecing commuters mainly tourists. Considered as a bane to the tourism industry, the problem of overcharging by tourist taxis was on Thursday viewed by the transport authorities with serious concern and appropriate measures have been chalked up to curb the same at a meeting held in Panjim. List of telephones of 33 districts and Maharashtra and Goa has been included in the CD-ROM directory, which is available at the cost of Rs.50 each. According to the residents, two wild cats on the prowl in the village, have reportedly killed over a dozen cattle and the scared residents remain indoors from 7 pm to 6.30 am.
