Power supply was disrupted at many places in the state today for nearly 5 hours, due to the breakdown in the Koyna power generating unit in Maharashtra even as the Power Minister warned of hardships to consumers in the coming days.
Mr Kamat said that the power supply received from Maharashtra through the Colvale line was nil from 10.30 a.m to 4 p.m., today."The electricity department tried to maintain the power supply to some important installations like water supply units, etc," he said, further pointing out, "however we had to compulsorily undertake load shedding for industrial units." Mr Kamat also said that the power supply from Koyna power generating unit was restored at 4 p.m.
Speaking further, the Power Minister said that for the past 46 days, that is from September 19 to November 4, some disturbances were observed in the power supply to the state due to the closing down of the western grid Corba unit. "The power supply from this unit to Goa was restored to normalcy, yesterday," he added.
Mr Kamat also informed that the Ramagundam power generation unit in the southern grid has been shut down for maintenance from November 4 and would remain so for next 25 days.
"This may cause some hardships to the power consumers in the state. However, the electricity department is making efforts to see that the domestic power supply is maintained, in addition to the electricity supplied to government installations and major utility services," he observed.
The Power Minister appealed to the power consumers in the state to bear with the power interruptions as the situation was out of control of the chief engineer of the electricity department.
PTI adds: Large parts of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat were severely affected today following a major breakdown in power supply, even as Maharashtra sought an inquiry by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) into the failure.
"Due to the suspected fault in Maharashtra state electricity board (MSEB) system coupled with the prevailing low voltages at many strategic locations, there was a grid disturbance in western region at 10.28 a.m. leading to a power breakdown," the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) general manager, Mr Anjan Roy said.
The restoration was initiated immediately by the PGCIL and the system was normalised by 1.05 p.m. with the synchronisation of the 400 KV Gandhar-Padghe line thereby integrating all the state grids, he said.
Mumbai was spared due to the immediate islanding by the TATA power company and was ensured power supply by TPC and Reliance's BSES. But the neighbouring Navi Mumbai and other cities like Pune and Kolhapur were crippled by the failure.
Train services ground to a halt on the Igatpuri-Bhusawal section and several express, mail and goods trains were delayed by more than an hour. --------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 6/11/03 page 1 ---------------------------------------------------
