November 9, 2003 For the memorable part, Goanet has been a hospitable household. The harm becomes when one uses it as a domestic weapon to knock down religious icons and other social, cultural, ethnic or political artifacts. More importantly, we don't need to denigrate the other in someone else's household. We can honorably do so in our own household, on the premise of inviting the other for an eye to eye dialogue. And why should it matter if one is a saint and the other a sinner? That is no different from the argumentative rationale if God exists or does not exist. What is essential is to be oneself in the scheme of all things, and to coexist in such a manner as not to threaten the other or be threatened by. RESPONSE: While I agree with what Dom Martins has writtten i.e. the need for restraint and not impinging on other people's beliefs. I am of the opinion that Goanet does also serve a purpose, to bring about change and sometimes there is no avenue left but to bring isssues on the Goanet. It is the only forum that is widely read by Goans and people interested in Goa and Goans. If one cannot open up dialogue, then one is forced to bring the issue into the open where it does have an effect. Some of the postings that have been put up on the Goanet, distasteful as they might appear, ( I do not believe that it is a matter of washing dirty linen) have had an immediate effect of a resolution. There are many such issues that have had an effect, too many in fact to mention, including some of the postings that have been put up by me. It is just a matter of bringing to light issues that need to be tackled. Especially issues that matter to the Goan disapora World wide. If this door is shut then Goanet will loose its unique status as an Avenue for the average (Goan) writer to get heard!
