SALGAOCAR DAZZLE: In a repeat of the 1999 final, Salgaocar Football Club
upset defending champions East Bengal 5-4 via tiebreaker, capitalizing on
costly misses by star strikers Baichung Bhutia and Mike Okoro in the penalty
shootout, to lift the Durand Cup in New Delhi on November 10. The two teams,
who finished as the champions and runners-up in the last National Football
League, were locked 1-1 at the end of the full time and golden goal extra

TRIBUTES TO TEAM: Thrilled by his Club's triumph against all odds en route
to the Durand Cup title, Salgaocar Sports Club patron Shivanand Salgaocar,
yesterday said that conquering teams like Mohammedan Sporting, Mahindra
United and eventually East Bengal, was Herculean effort with limited

THEY HAVE DONE GOA PROUD: Salgaocar Sports Club have done Goa proud. They
have brought to the State the oldest and the prestigious football trophy in
the country-the Durand Cup-a second time. It is an unprecedented feat in the
annals of Goa's footballing history. (GT)

TN DEVELOPMENT UNFORTUNATE: Governor of Goa, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani yesterday
criticised the repression of Press in Tamil Nadu saying it was "unfortunate
for the success of democracy". Interacting with journalists at the Raj
Bhavan, Sahani said whether it is in Tamil Nadu or any other State, such a
thing is unfortunate. (H)

OLD GOA TO GET NEW LOOK: The World Heritage site at Old Goa will be
beautified in view of the International Film Festival of India scheduled to
be held between 6 and 16 December 2004 and also the decennial exposition of
the relics of St Francis Xavier. (GT)

BEAUTIFICATION OF HISTORICAL MONUMENTS: The Goa government will shortly
undertake a project costing around Rs.32 lakh to give a face-lift to the
surroundings of various state monuments of historical importance. The spots
include Mahalsa temple at Verna, Mahadev temple at Agapur, Kapleshwar temple
tank at Kapleshwari, Kavlem, besides the rock carvings in South Goa, temple
at Tambdi Surla, Safa Masjid, etc. the noted Architect, Mr KD Sadhale, has
been appointed as the architect for this project, said CM Manohar Parrikar.

PLEAS AGAINST MICKKY, BABUSH: Has the United Goans Democratic Party resigned
to its fate that it has little choice in its pursuit to disqualify its two
former MLAs, Miccky Pacheco and Babush Monserrate? It's a little over month
and half since the regional outfit filed the disqualification plea against
the duo-both occupying ministerial berths in the Parrikar-led
government-with the office of Goa Speaker on August 20. (H)

THREE WOMEN HELD: Three women-Manjula (25), Shanti (25) and Sarita
(18)--were held in a chain snatching case, which occurred yesterday morning
at Zuarinagarin a Vasco-bound mini bus. A 60-year-old woman, Duminga
Carvalho of Sancoale, boarded the bus at Sancoale. After some time, sensing
something touching her neck, the aged women realized that her golden chain
was missing and shouted for help.  The chain snatchers were caught by the
travels in the bus and handed over to the Vasco police. (NT)

TEENAGER COMMITS SUICIDE: A 17-year-old student, Melwin Pascoal Fernandes,
from Orgao, Loutulim, committed suicide by hanging himself to a rafter from
the room of his house yesterday morning. (GT)

ALTERNATE SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, has
stressed the need to propagate ayurvedic and homoeopathic system of
medicine. He was speaking after felicitating ten ayurvedic and homoeopathic
doctors, who have worked for more than 25 years in their profession, at a
function organised by the Goa Board of Indian System of Medicine and
Homoeopathy at Margao. (NT)

GROWING UP WITH INDISCIPLINE: Lately, as is widely acknowledged, problems of
indiscipline in schools are fast increasing. One school recently had to
resort to "red chilly powder" treatment to control the students. "Children
today have got a high IQ (intelligence quotient), but a low EQ (emotional
quotient). Both parents are usually working. They have become more attention
seeking and defy rules to get attention," says a head-master of a school in
Guirim. In Panjim, the head master of another school agrees, "Parents today
have no time to mind their children. They give their children a lot of

ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT: The Maina Curtorim police arrested Socorro Barreto,
Francisco D'Costa, Agnelo D'Costa and Santano Colaco, all from Nuvem for
assaulting Pobre Miranda and Socorro Pinto, also from Nuvem. (GT)

HONORARIUM TO COUNCILS HIKED: Honorarium payable to all municipal council
chairpersons has been hiked by Rs.1,500 while those to councilors by
Rs.1,000 from immediate effect. The cabinet yesterday approved the hike.
Accordingly, the chairpersons of 'A' class municipal councils will get
Rs.4,500 as monthly honorarium, 'B' class Rs.3,500 and 'C' class Rs.3,000.

cadre, particularly at the grassroot level, the Congress party held an
"Awakening Meet" in the city under the leadership of the Mapusa Block

'HELP NAB BANK CHEATS': A special reward has been announced for anyone
offering information about two suspects, Rudolf Patrick Crasto and Surekha
Apanna Naik, who had allegedly cheated Bank of India, Vijaya Bank and three

AD HOC PANEL OF 'GOA TOMORROW': An ad hoc committee of 'Goa Tomorrow' was
elected at Martins Beach Corner yesterday. Caetano Martins, president,
Vassudeva Ganesh, vice president, VA Kamat, secretary, Allen D'Lima,
treasurer, Members are Prof Dr Olivinho Gomes, Dulba Halankar, Balchandra
Naik, CB Fernandes, John Gonsalves. Dr Olivinho Gomes was elected chairman

"DULPOD", "DEKNNI" IN DISTANT AUSTRALIA: Mando-dulpods and deknnis-one form
of Goan folk music-will get a boast from an unexpected quarter, when expat
Goans based in Australia sponsor a publication of a book on the subject.
Goan Overseas Association of New South Wales in Australia recently decided
to sponsor the publication of Folk Songs of Goa-mando-dulpods and deknnis.
This sponsorship involves financial support of Rs.60.000. It is an endeavour
initiated in 1933 by Maestro Micael Martins and continued by Dr Jose
Pereira, Professor Emeritus of Theology of Fordham University, New York, and
Fr Antonio da Costa, psychotherapist, ministering to the elderly in Metro
Phoenix, Arizona, USA. (H)

ADORABELLE CROWNED "MISS GOA": A perfect combination of beauty and brains
saw 19-year-old Adorabelle Amaral, from Panjim, clinch the coveted Miss Goa
2003 title, while Valerie Rodrigues was the first runner-up, at the beauty
pageant in Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa on November 9. The six finalists had
to go through three rounds each of beach wear, their best attire and
casuals, while also exhibiting their wits during the question and answer

PI FABIAN DIES YOUNG: Police Inspector Fabian D'Souza, in-charge of the
State Crime Records Bureau, died on Monday, after a prolonged but brave
battle against cancer. (H)
