CM'S SURPRISE VISIT AT COLLECTOR'S OFFICE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar gave a surprise visit to the Deputy Collector's office yesterday and took stock of the developmental works being carried out in Vasco. (GT) FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY: AFFECTED FAMILIES TO BE REHABILITATED: A meeting of the Goa Rehabilitation Corporation Board, held yesterday at Mormugao Port Trust' s guest house at Headland Sada, decided to rehabilitate 100 families out of 300 hundred, affected by the four-lane highway, in the first phase. (NT) LAND DISPUTE STALLS AIRPORT EXPANSION: Claims and counter claims over a four-acre strip of land has stalled the major expansion plans for the Dabolim airport. Ownership of the land, situated between the four-lane highway and the outer wall of the airport, is being claimed by the Navy and the Revenue Department. (GT) TRAJANO QUITS CONG: Signs that liquor baron and Janata Party working president, Dr Vijay Mallya, has intensified his coaching expedition in Goa's political waters got visible on Tuesday. Dr Mallya, announced the appointment of Trajano D'Mello, hitherto the general secretary of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, as his party's fledgling Goa unit's working president. (GT) MUSIC ON THE 'MONTE': Continuing last year's trend, the chapel of Our Lady of the Mount, Old Goa, will once again host the Monte Music Festival, from November 13 to 16. The heritage site has been recently restored by Fundacao Oriente, but is seldom used by the local community, which raises problems of maintenance and conservation. (GT) VELSAO SHACK RAISES STORM: The decision of the government to release an advertisement for setting up a shack at Velsao beach after it was illegally erected, has aggrieved the locals, who say that the advertisement was merely done to give government approval to the illegal structure. Earlier, the Department of Tourism had advertised for a single shack on the beach which was later allotted to one Leonildes Carvalho. To add to Carvalho's shack story, another shack was erected subsequently without legal sanction. (GT) SHACKS: COURT ORDERS STATUS QUO AT COLVA: While other beaches might be witnessing shack-erection activity, a local court in Margao has ordered to maintain status quo not only in the allotment of shacks, but its construction too at Colva, pending disposal of a petition for injunction. The court's intervention came when Rosa Maria Pacheco, a resident of Colva, filed a petition saying that she being in the shack business for the last two decades, the Director of Tourism and Francisco Xavier Pacheco has violated the notified terms by allotting 12 shacks for Colva, exceeding the number of permitted shacks by four. (H) 'MV AIDACARA' TO ARRIVE IN GOA: For the first time, a record 'turn around' is expected with the scheduled arrival of another cruise liner 'MV AIDAcara' in Goa on November 13. This is largely due to the short distance of 5 kms between the Mormugao Harbour and the Dabolim airport, that such a turn around was possible. According to Capt Bruno D'Souza of JM Baxi, on Thursday (Nov 13) the cruise liner will arrive from Mumbai with 925 passengers onboard. During the Day, around 244 passengers, mainly from Germany, shall arrive by a charter flight at Dabolim. They will then board the vessel. The charter flight will later leave with around 114 passengers, who are scheduled to disembark from the liner. (H) 'BAN FOREIGN TOUR OPERATORS': Taxi operators from Calangute have demanded an immediate ban on foreign tour operators in the State, who they claim are overcharging the tourists. They claimed that the government had only taken note of the taxi operators who were allegedly overcharging commuters, but was silent on foreign tour operators, who were charging customers in pounds per head, which was much more than their rates. As of now, there are about 7,600 tourist vehicles operating in the State, of which there are about 600 yellow and black taxis. (H) HONING COCONUT CLIMBING SKILLS: At a time when the availability of coconut pluckers in the villages are on a gradual decline, the Margao Agricultural farm near the Rajendra Prasad stadium plays host to a different lot of farmers these days-the coconut tree climbers. Around 20 farmers from South Goa are undergoing a five-day training in coconut tree climbing. Equipped with approved metallic kits, one could see the trainees climbing up and down the trees dotting the farm. (H) ANGRY BEES SAVE LABOURERS: Some labourers were working at the property of one Anthony Pereira at Ouzra Guddar on the banks of the Khushavati river in Quepem on November 8. At around 4 pm, stirred by strong winds a large beehive, which was hanging on a coconut tree, came crashing down metres away from the labourers. When the bees stung four labourers, they ran helter-skelter to avoid the bee stings. Moments later, a bolt of lightning coincidentally struck the very same coconut tree. The labourers claim they were lucky to have escaped from the jaws of death, primarily because of the honey bees. (H) CREATE KONKANI CHAIR, SEMINAR URGES COCHIN UNIVERSITY: The two-day national seminar on Konkani poetry has recommended to Cochin University in Kerala the establishment of a chair for Konkani and has demanded that the Government of Kerala take steps to include Konkani in the list of second languages to be offered at the graduate and under graduate levels in all the universities in the state. (H) KBM BOOK EXPO: Konkani Bhasha Mandal will hold an exhibition-cum-sale of Konkani books for children, between November 14 to November 20 at the Konkani Bhavan in Margao.
