Although we have never met, I feel compelled to write you as I like and respect what
you wrote.
You mentioned how Goan expats have done precious little to help the community and how
it was easy in this day and age to communicate directly with local Ngos. All one had
to do you said
"was just pick up the phone and ask them what support can be given". And this is what
I am wanting to do!!
My name is Aprile, I am from Canada and am planning a second trip to Goa in
January/Feb. I am a university graduate and have worked in project development in
Asia for more than two years. I was also volunteer for a few months last winter at a
school for disadvantaged children in Sikkim. My interests and skills are varied but
largely lie in working with women and youth.
Now I am thinking about how I can contribute something back to the community that I
like so much. And I wonder, could you tell me the names of some Ngo's in the Panaji
area that I could contact???

Please correct me if I am wrong, but these volunteers and NGOs in Goa operate with
little or no
funds, and in some cases have regular jobs to maintain. In the case of Bailancho
Saad, I believe
they only have volunteers, and have jobs to work at and families to support. Often, I
have heard
why NGOs in Goa do not do more as if they have been appointed the sole guardians and
providers of
public service and everyone else is supposed to sit on the sidelines or at a PC many
thousands of
miles from Goa reminiscing of the Goa they once knew and provide gratuitous advice. I
have see
Bailancho Saad chastised as if they have been the sole annointed protectors of women
rights/issues
in Goa. What have Goan expat women done to help? What do Goan expats do? Precious
little. In
this day and age, it is easy to communicate directly with NGO's in Goa. Just pick up
the phone
and ask them what support can be given. When visiting Goa pay them a visit and help,
instead of
the "mandatory" beach visits. Our Goan cyber-crowd is long on hot-air, short on
action.
