--------- VD "Here" in English - Is it Anga, Angor, Ing, Inga or Ikde ?
CP
The correct word is "Heutain". Unless you're facing North East. Then it is "Teutain". In Alto-Mapusa it is "Teotonio".
"Inga" is used only in certain areas of Sanquelim. On Saturday night in Arpora it is "Ingo"
--------- VD "Down" in English - Is it Sokla or Khalla ?
CP
The correct word is "Sakail" (or "Sakhaillean" if you mean "below"). "Sokoilo" if you mean from South Goa. And "Voilo" if you mean non-Goan
-------- VD "There" in English - is it Thuim, Tinga, Ting or Tikde
CP
"Thuim, Tinga, Ting, Tikde" is a famous song from a block buster Malayalam movie.
Strangely enough, there is no word for "there" in Konkani. You have to go there and then say the word for "here", "Heutain"
--------- VD "I am going" in English - is it "Aum Voita" or "Aum Vetam" ?
CP
Depends where you're going.
If you're going for a Tiatr it's "Ami Voitam"
If you're going for Natak it's "Ami Vetoch"
If you're going for a bullfight it's " Ami Voitau". All sentences in Salcette end with "u".
If you're going to Old Goa on 3rd December you probably will get stuck in a traffic jam.
--------
VD
Is the correct way of saying "How are you ?" in Konkani, "Tu koho hai ?" or "Tu kosso assa ?"
CP
The correct greeting is "Koss ahai?" ("Koss ahaiu" in Salcete).
A more correct and popular greeting is "Ghott murre?", which literally translates as "Hard Maaan?"
---------
VD There are a lot of other words, and idioms that dont come to mind at the moment. Perhaps some GoaNetters could set me straight, so that I can speak my beloved "Maim bhas" correctly. Vivian A. D'Souza
CP
No offense meant Vivian, but Konkani with all it's dialects is not an easy language to learn by the book. The best way is to converse in Konkani at every opportunity, and probably in ten years or so you might just have people NOT grimacing at your grammar. On the other hand...
Cheers!
Cecil
