The background: Our Lady of Immaculate Conception church or the popularly known IC church is located about thirty minutes away from Borivli West. The church has about 18,000 catholic most of them are original settlers either from Mangalore or from Goa. In most of the houses at least someone is in the gulf. There are also a number of house here where their husbands are in the gulf and their wives live hire. LOPES MANOR is the flat where the incidence happened. If you just walk straight down from the IC church for few minutes you will get a farm product shops and a fish market. Just in front of that there located this LOPES MANOR since 1985. In ground floor of the building there is a Vienna Cake shop. It closes at 2.00 pm every day and opens at 4.00 pm. Above the cake shop is a Flat No. 4 belongs to Mr. Adrian Lopes who was the owner of the house and gave the land for developing to builders and the building was completed in the year 1985. Above the house if Mr. Adrian the house is Flat No.6 belonged to Late Leticia Mendes who is murdered on October 19th by four youngsters. She and her husband Xavier Mendes originally from Aldona, Bardes, Goa. But they used to stay in Sahar, Andheri East. In 1985 when they moved to this building in Flat no. 6 they were the first tenant in 1985 says Mr. Adrian Lopes. He says at that time they were financially not well of but since during that time itself Mr. Xavier Mendes went to Qatar to work in an air-conditioning maintenance unit they came up in life. They had a daughter Glenda and a boy Glifton. Glenda was married to Sunil Lobo of Malad who was working in Pune rig. Thus Mrs. Glenda Lobo (Age 24) along with her son Daylon Lobo(18 months) was living with her husband in Pune. As Glifton got employment in Dubai it firm Leticia Mendes became lonely to live in the house. Initially Mrs. Leticia Mendes was working on a temporary employment as a teacher in Borivli. There she met a friend Mrs. Clara Dias of Malad who still teaches in the same school. Since then for quite a many years now both of them were very close friends. Mrs. Clara Lobo had a son called Mr. Wilfred Dias who too was in good terms with Mrs. Leticia. As per the neighbours Mrs. Leticia Mendes(Age 55) was firm and a self made personality. She had a very good talent of cooking. She used to cook different types of tasty items. Now since she was alone after the wedding of Glenda and Glifton going to Dubai, instead of sitting idle in the house she gave a thought to make some revenue out of her talent. Thus she started to give continuous advertisements in papers so that if anyone is interested in knowing to learn any item to cook then she can teach them. She was advertising in papers since last one and half years. She also had a menu of items with her. She used to show to the people if anyone enquires and she had her quotation ready for each items. Thus some girls approached her to learn cake, chocolates and other items. She took them classes may be of one or two days and sometimes may be more days. Classes were only of practical cooking type lasted to show them the item how to prepare it and make it. Thus it used to take her one or two hours. She was not taking continuous classes but may be one or two classes in a week most of them were in the week ends. Mr. Wilfred Dias of Malad who was studying in RIZWI catering college of Bandra. He was also the son of Mrs. Clara Dias who is her good friend of her since she met her while teaching in Borivli. Though Glenda was staying in Pune she had come to see her mother with her eighteen-month son Daylon Lobo. She was in Flat No. 6 with her mother on 17th November. On this day at about 8.00 pm Mr. Wilfred Dias came with the four guys of Malad, he introduced to Mrs. Leticia that they want to learn how to make cake. Since Mrs. Leticia knew very well about Mr. Wilfred she obliged to take class for the first time for these boys. The appointment was fixed for 2.00 pm on 19th of November. But it is not clear whether Mr. Wilfred and his four guys had seen Mrs. Glenda Lobo on 17th itself. If they had not seen they must have thought that even on 19th too the lady will be alone in the flat. If they had seen Glenda on 17th they must have thought that she may not stay there for a long time as the lady is always alone in the flat. On 19th November the flat of Mr. Adrian Lopes was open from 2.30 pm itself. There were Mr. and Mrs. Lopes and their son at home. Mr. Lopes was down with fewer. They kept the door open because they were expecting their one more son to come back home from his classes. On 19th Mr. Wilfred had been to his exams. His four friends from Malad namely Ashis, Clinton, Karan and Clint came to flat no. 6 at 3.00 pm. Mrs. Leticia opened the flat for the guys and took them to the kitchen. But the guys did not notice two people in the bedroom. They were Mrs. Glenda Lobo the daughter of Latecia Mendes and her kid Dylon Lobo of 18 months. During this time itself Glenda had called her father Xavier Mendes and husband of Mrs. Leticia Mendes who is in Qatar and was busy talking over the phone. Mr. Xavier Mendes was talking over the phone with Mrs. Glenda Lobo till 3.15 pm. Afterwards Mr. Xavier Mendes did not hear any noise in the phone and the phone got cut after ten minutes. Flat No.4 Mr. Adrian Lopes says his flat was still open even during this time as their son was not yet come. He usually hears noise if anybody pulls cot in Flat No.6. But neither he nor his wife or his son absolutely did not hear any noise of screaming, shouting, moving or falling in Flat No.6. But at 4.10 pm their son Avishay Lopes saw someone walking straight down the stairs but bleeding full. At once they could not recognised the lady as Glenda Lobo as she was completely covered with the blood. But she came down till their entrance she said the name of Wilfred Dias and mentioned that the son of Clara Dias. She also told the name of her son Daylon and just collapsed. When the family members of Mr. Adrian Lopes went up to flat no. 6 there was a shocking scene waiting for them. Mrs. Leticia Mendes was murdered in the kitchen and eighteen-month world son of Mrs. Glenda Lobo was hanged on the fan using the telephone wire. Then Mr. Adrian Lopes owner of flat no. 4 rushed to report the police and admitted Glenda Lobo (24 yr) immediately to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli. She is now in ward no. 2 the female ward of the same hospital. It seams that she has not yet been informed that her son is no more. Thus the culprits got caught immediately. All the four murderers along with the fifth Wilfred Dias have been arrested under sections 302(murder), 307(attempt to commit murder), 397(robbery at knife point), 45(theft) and 120(conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. While two minors Clinton (16) and Karan (17) are in the custody of Juvenile court till Dec 1, the other three will be in the police custody till Dec. 4. According to some sources from the passerby who were down there was a auto rickshaw and a motorbike waiting for them at the entrance of the building Lopes Manor and the culprits, the four youngsters ran in these vehicles at about 3.30 pm. There is also information from the police sources that 75,000 cash and jewellery was stolen from the house of Mrs. Leticia Mendes. It looks like if the motive of their murder was theft then after killing Mr. Leticia they must have came to the bedroom to steal more things. But since they found another lady they could not live her alive and attempted to murder her. She fell unconscious but they thought she is dead. Fearing that the child may cry for the mother they mercilessly killed the angel too. Also one more possibility would be Glenda Lobo saw something unusual happening in Kitchen or Mr. Leticia was trying to scream and thus she went towards the kitchen and during that time the guys killed her too. According to the neighbours the full house was stinking with very bad smell from 19th for three days. And the smell went of just on the funeral day 22nd say the neighbours. What is the motive ? The media suggests different possibilities for this theft and murder cases. One possibility the media gives is that Mr. Wilfred himself is financially not doing well and one of the members among the gang Mr. Kanna was thrown out of the house. Thus since both of them desperate in getting money they planned this. But the reporter has doubt in his mind like whether Mr. Wilfred Dias was really involved in the murder case or the four guys mislead Mr. Wilfred. Or there may be more than five youngsters involved in this case. In fact Wilfred's mother was a very close friend of the Late Leticia Mendes. According to the neighbours she was in good terms with Wilfred too. And we need to note that Mr. Wilfred introduced these four guys to the lady. Because, if the motive of the young boys was just the robbery, then if Mr. Wilfred was involved in it then how come he himself introduced the boys to the lady. Was he not aware that he would be the first one to be caught as he has already introduced these boys to be his friends. What other possibility the media suggest is that the intention of Mr. Wilfred was waiting to murder the women as she was an hindrance to have relationship with Glenda Lobo. He didn't like the women because she did not give her daughter to him with whom he had an affair. But if this is the case and if Wilfred himself wanted to finish of the lady then why didn't he accompany his friends to carry out this task since none of them aware that Glenda and her baby too are at home. When I enquired about the love affair with the neighbours they just said it is nothing but the juicy story of the media. One more possibility the media reports is that the property dispute. The media says that the Leticia Mendes was not in good terms with the neighbours of her floor. Also since after getting consciousness Mrs. Glenda Lobo walked down the stairs from flat no. 6 to flat no. 4. But if there is a dispute, whether this dispute was the reason for this act ? Who are these youngsters ? When this news reporter went around Borivli where there was a panic of murders there was no clear picture about the youngsters. Who are they? What are they? Why do they do this ? What is their religion. What is their goal? Each and every one was giving his own explanation. Media gave lots of narrated stories. Thus my curiosity increased and I contacted some of the active catholic leaders from the parish of ORLEM where all these five youngsters hail from. Even Sunil Lobo the husband of Mrs. Glenda Lobo too is from the same area. When I visited the buildings of the boys where they lived, I just got an entirely different picture. I was just stunned! I was astonished and astounded to see that all FIVE of them where Catholics. I was confounded and bewildered to know that the nature of these boys were predictable. Every one knew about them. Their life style itself was that. And the neighbours were just dumbfounded because the parents themselves supported their children. They never corrected them. When the children committed blunders instead of scolding their children they just attacked the victims. They themselves were into the wrong way of life with the bad habits. What was happened ? But the question is what is the real role of Mr. Wilfred Francis Dias. He is the son of Mrs. Clara Dias who is a very close friend of Mrs. Leticia Dias for many years. Wilfred does not have the habit of smoking or drinking. It is also not clear from anybody whether he too is an drug addict. He was attending catering classes at Rizwi college. The four alleged boys are not at all from the catering college. Then why is that he introduced Mrs. Leticia that they wanted to learn cooking. Wilfred was attending the classes but it is said he was not regular for that. He wrote his exams on the days of murder. If he was a good boy and if he knew about the friends then why he duped his mothers friend. If he knew that the motive of his friends is robbery, then with what guts he directly introduced the four guys to Mrs. Leticia. >From the background of the other four boys it was learnt that all these boys were the slave of drugs, girls and other weaknesses. When I visited the apartments of theirs I found the neighbours saying that they were bad boys for about four five years. They used to do all sorts of works. They used to get girls at night to the terrace of the apartment. They were smokers and drug addicts. Some say they also were involved in small robberies here and there. Though their parents were aware about all these activities they were keeping mum. They never bothered to correct their children. Once one watchman shouted at one of the boy for coming after midnight. But for this instead of enquiring the son the father scolded the watchman itself. Also the families were not decent ones. They too were not living a good life. Then is this the case that these four boys somehow pocketed Mr. Wilfred by giving him different reasons and planned the murder for the sake of robbery. Also, if that is the case why Mr. Wilfred obliged to take this responsibility when he already knew the behaviour of these spoilt guys? All these things will be clear only after the investigation. Some neighbours of the culprits also say that the watchman of one of their apartment in Malad had seen a trunk left in the tarrace. When the watchman opened it he saw some seven big knives. When he enquired the lady of the below flat said it belongs to her and she took the trunk down. But after the incidence again the trunk appeared there. Probably the lady kept it back with fear. This was reported to the police and they seized them. These knives must be the work of these guys says a neighbour. Now let us look at the backgroud of all five boys: 1. Wilfred Francis Dias (Age: 19): He is the son of Mrs. Clara Dias very close friend of Late Leticia Mendes since many years. His house is at Malvani no 1, a chawl located in Jan Kalyan Nagar Orlem, Malad west near the police station. His parents had paid seven lakhs donation to Rizwi College to admit in the Rizwi Catering college. Accourding to the sources he was a very quiet guy. Many surprise how can he get involved in such cases. He was currently studying in the second year and writing his exams on the day of the murder. In fact on 19th he returned from exams to his residence at 1.30 pm. To reduce exam tension he invited his friend Abhijit Khare to his house and both of them watched a movie till 3.30 pm. It is also said that he was not looking tensed or preoccupied and was at ease. He did not make any call till 3.30 according to Abhijit. Abhijit left him at 3.30 after watching the movie. There is quite lot distance from Malad to Borivli IC colony and thus he was not directly involved in the murder. But it is a question mark whether he executed the whole plan from his house according to the media reports. His mother Clara Dias is a teacher in the school of Borivli. Mrs Clara Dias and her husband Francis were strict with the child say the sources. Though it should be also noted that Wilfred was not regular in his attendance. But they say he did not have any bad habits like smoking or drinking. Wilfred was a peaceful guy say his neighbours. It's hard to believe that a good boy like him could do some thing like this. 2. Ashish Dominic Warwale (Age 20): He is from the Arjun Apt, Vishal Nagar, Orlem, Malad West. He had done the Aeronautic course at Pune and working in Malad in a call centre. He was a good cricket player. His father was a Marati convert and his mother was from Raigad. Though as per neighbours his father Mr. Warvale was not a good natured person. He had served Our Lady of Lourdes church, Orlem as a parish council member and a zonal leader. His mother is a teacher at Kandivli poisar Our lady of Remidias. He has a younger sister of 17 years. Though he was a very bad character person with all unwanted unhealthy habits for the past four five years his parents never bothered to correct their son. 3. Clinton Desmond Fernandes (Age 16): He too is a resident of Arjun Apt where Ashis lived. He was 11th stanard student of Prahladari Dalmia Lions College of Commerce and Economics, S.V.Road, Malad West. His father was working in offshore rig and used to get holidays rarely. It is not sure whether he was aware of the characters of his son. But they say that his mother too was a very bad character person with all the bad habits. She visits unwanted places they say. In fact she is from Mangalore and her husband is from Goa. Clinton is the only son of theirs. But Clinton was heavily addicted to lots of bad habits. 4. Karan Ravi Kanna (Age 17): He was staying in Neelkanth Apartment, Evershine Nagar, Malad West. He is the son of the Jeweller. He was a student of Elphinstone College at Fort. Since he was very active in sports he was very popular in college. But he was of very bad nature. Drug addict, smoker and he had all unwanted habits. His father was a Punjabi and mother was a Goan. It was his second wife. Thus he did not have good relationship with his son. Recently he had a fight with his parents and was thrown out of the house. Some say that since he desperately needed money he along with his friends carried out the blunder in the view of robbery. 5. Clint Earnest Fernandes (Age 19): He is from Jana Kalyan Nagaer, Orlem, Malad west. He was good at sports. His father is a engineer at the BEST. He was a 2nd year B.Com student of Arts, Science and commerce at Bandra(West). But this reported did not get much information about his personal habits like whether he too was a drug addict and had the unwanted habits. The funeral Day: As it was an unusual incidence people from all nick and corner of IC colony gathered to see the body. The body arrived at the Lopes Manor Apt at 2.10 pm on 22nd November. Mr. Xavier Mendes the husband of Late Leticia had arrived in the morning of 21st itself. His son Mr. Glifton Mendes who works in Dubai in a software firm arrived on 21st evening. When the body arrived, all the family members, friends and relatives busted with tears. The son Glifton fell on the dead body and did not got up for a long time, though others were insisting him to get up so that they took can see the face. The face of Mrs. Leticia Mendes was completely torn. Her front teeth were broken. Her upper lips were torn. Her mouth too was torn may be because the culprits put the wire through her mouth so that she can not make noise while robbing and murdering. At about 3.00 her son in law and the husband of Mrs. Glenda Lobo who is taking treatment in the hospital came in remained for a short period refused to comment for anything and walked away. The first cousin of Mr. Xavier Mendes, Fr. Santan Carvalo came and blessed the body at 3.30 pm and immediately the funeral procession started. The funeral mass started at 3.50 pm. One thing that could be noticed in the crowd is the curiosity and a kind of fear. Anyone can do such things anywhere they were saying. One could understand that, now a days the people do not want to see their reality. They are not at all contented with whatever they have. They want to have a cold wars with their neighbours in terms of show off. They do not want to to care of anybody. When the money is there and money comes the people get the lust of more money. Money is not at all sufficient for their habits because they just look forward to the lavish life and ash making. For them the filmy incidences and and ease life is the ideal one. The mountain at far looks very smooth to them. They themselves forget their grass roots. Thus when the money falls short they try to grab it in any method. The situation like husbands work in gulf and their wife enjoy their life adds oil to fire. Thus we see things get bursting one by one here and there. At least at this moment if we become careful we may keep our society in control.
