He said if the villagers do not oppose the move, then it will pose serious threat to their health.
"How can the government take such a step without consulting the village panchayat?" he quipped. Mr Halankar was speaking at a gathering after the villagers of Colvale took to the streets with placards in hands, opposing the state government's proposal of setting up of a garbage disposal plant in the village. He said that if the proposed plan goes ahead, t he villagers might be forced to vacate the village on health grounds.
Earlier, noted fashion designer and son of the village, Wendell Rodricks said that the proposed disposal plant will be harmful to the villagers as all chemical and industrial effluents would contaminate the area. "Why should the Colvale village be made a garbage dumping ground of north Goa? Each city or village in Goa should have its own dumping sites and disposal plants, he added.
Rodricks further said that all the villagers should co-operate to oppose such a plan from the state government. He reminded that if the villagers do not oppose now, than in the near future, the coming generation would be the worst sufferers.
The Camurlim village Sarpanch, Mr Sharad Gad proposed that instead of
setting up such disposal plants in the vicinity of the village, it would be better
to have it in remote areas in north Goa.
The representative of Goa Foundation , Mr Mathew Pereira stated that it was wrong on the part of the government to choose a site which was close to the residential area.
Others who spoke on the occasion included president of Shree Ram temple of Colvale, Mr Shivram Chodankar, Mr Moses Fernandes, Mr Bharat Bag, Neville D'Costa and Ms Margaret Nobbay. ------------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 26/11/03 page 3 -------------------------------------------------------
