Dear Goacan, I read anxiously your documented clipping about "Transportation of Unhygienic Beef " as published in the daily "The Navhind Times" of 29-10-2003. Unfortunately, except for the repeated use of the adjective "unhygienic" , there was not one sentence or even a word to enable an impartial reader to come to his own independent conclusion that the beef was indeed unhygienic. To be very sharp on the point, as the report itself narrates, the prosecutions launched by the Police , Veterinary and other authorities seems to be only on account of mere lack of licence for carrying on slaughter-house activities. The report itself seems to be based on the complaints of other beef-stall owners whose business seems to have been affected. A real example of arm-chair journalism, considering that a powerful newspaper like "The Navhind Times" could have very easily sent their reporter to Belgaum to do an on-site report of the alleged "unhygienic" conditions. You will surely agree that mere possession of a valid licence does not necessarily imply "hygienic" conditions. After all, all those restaurants in Panjim which were responsible for the jaundice outbreak, had licences which were as much valid as the driving licences of all those drivers responsible for the series of motor-vehicle accidents on the Verna Bye-pass ! So I request you that before you disseminate such clippings from the Press, please check if the content of the story justifies the headline. Your mandate as a public organization in the Consumer field requires that you really fight for minimum bench-mark hygienic conditions in all food-related trades and occupations, and not fall into the "official" line of equating possession of a valid licence with existence of hygienic conditions. Yours sincerely, Thalmann Pradeep Pereira Vasco-da-Gama, Goa. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
