CHILD KILLED IN FATORDA MISHAP: Suma Lamani, 13-year-old daughter of daily
wage labourer Fakirappa, died at Fatorda when a loaded truck tilted on one
side of the road and the material loaded in the vehicle came crashing down
on the girl. The police are on the lookout for the driver, who escaped
immediately after the accident. (GT)

MORE CASES AGAINST KHALAP: Former Union Minister and Mapusa Urban
Cooperative Bank chairman Ramakant Khalap had two more cases filed against
him by the CID/Crime Branch, which brings the tally to six cases till date.

ONE LAKH ORCHIDS, ANTHURIUMS BY MARCH 04: The Chief Secretary, Mr DS Negi,
said that the State would witness planting of around 1 lakh orchids and
anthuriums by March 2004 and observed that government would shift from its
current mind-set as well as the use of existing technology, for the
promotion of horticulture and floriculture. (NT)

COURT NOTICES TO STATE GOVT: The Bombay High Court, Panaji, has issued
notices to the State government and Zoivonta Esvonta Porbo in response to a
recently filed contempt petition, filed by advocate Rodrigues. Rodrigues
sought to bring to the court's notice the reappointment of Porobo as
president of the Goa Administrative Tribunal even though the High Court had
set aside his earlier appointment in September 2002. The next hearing on the
matter is scheduled for 5 December. (GT)

POWER EMPLOYEES TO PROTEST: The Electricity Employees Union (Goa) will hold
a protest day on 2 December as part of an all-India level agitation by
electricity workers, to protest against the Electricity Act 2003 and ban on
strikes, by wearing black badges and holding rallies. (GT)

CM ORDERS CLEARING OF ROAD AT SOCORRO: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar
Parrikar, recently visited the site of a landslide at Socorro which had
resulted into the obstruction to the commuters along the road, and gave
directions to the engineers of the PWD to clear the road at the earliest.
The landslide had occurred during the monsoons. (NT)

WOMAN DROWNS IN POND: Lata Mahesh Patil, a 25-year-old woman, drowned in a
pond at a poultry farm in Petke-Dharbandora on Friday afternoon. She was an
employee of the farm and had gone to a nearby pond to wash clothes. Police
suspect that Lata may have accidentally slipped into the pond. (H)

ILLEGAL SHACKS: The Tourism department authorities are in a fix over the
issue of illegal shacks that have sprung up at various places in the State,
where tourists throng in large number particularly in the
Candolim-Calangute-Baga-Anjuna belt. According to senior officials of
Tourism, as per the government police only 45 shacks can be permitted in
Calangute but 97 shacks have come up in the area. (NT)

CLERK BOOKED: An accountant-clerk attached to the Margao police headquarters
has been charged by the Margao police for allegedly insulting the modesty of
a woman at the Hospicio hospital on November 27. (H)

TAI'S MGP IS ORIGINAL: The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), headed by
president Shashikala Kakodkar has been recognized as the original MGP in Goa
by the Election Commission of India. The oldest regional party in the State
was in the news a few months ago following a feud between two factions
within the party. (GT)

ANOTHER PASSPORT FORGERY UNEARTHED: In yet another case of passport forgery,
the fourth of its kind in the month, Immigration police at the Dabolim
airport on November 28 foiled an attempt by a Sharjah-bound passenger to
leave Goa with a fake passport. Immigration police Inspector Sucheta Dessai
informed Herald that 35-year-old Mohammad Shaikh, a native of Kerala,
arrived at the Dabolim International Airport in a bid to travel to Sharjah.
The passport had been tampered with and had the name of another person on
it. He confessed that he had paid an amount of Rs.50,000 to an agent in
Kerala so that he could travel to the United Arab Emirates. (H)

QUALITY HEALTH CARE FOR MARINERS: It will be seen as a major boost for the
thousands of Goan seafarers working onboard vessels all round the globe.
Medical examinations earlier conducted mainly in Mumbai will now be carried
out here in Goa at the Shripad Occupational Health centre, which was
inaugurated at the Verna Electronic Estate on November 28. (H)

RELEASE OF HETA'S "HIDDEN HANDS": "Hidden Hands: Masterbuilders of Goa", a
book written by free-lance writer and architecture historian Heta Pandit and
a list of "Heritage Properties and Sites in Panaji" will be released at the
hands of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 6 at 6.30 am at the
Institute Menezes Braganza Garden, Opp IMB, Panjim, in the presence of Mayor
of Corporation of the City of Panaji, Ashok Naik, and Dr Sergio Mascarenhas
de Almeida, Delegate, Fundacao Oriente in India. (GoaNOW)

FLORICULTURE CAN OFFSET TOURISM SETBACKS: Chief Secretary, DS Negi, on
November 28, said that the government is carrying out a silent revolution in
Goa to promote horticulture, which would provide a back up to the Goan
economy should the tourism industry fall through. The Chief Secretary was
speaking at the inaugural function of the three-day Plant Utsav held at the
Garcia de Orta Gardens in Panjim. (H)

EXTREME'S X'MAS ALBUM: Band "Extreme" released their debut Christmas album
titled "Extreme at Christmas" at Hotel a Lua, Merces, recently. Guitarist of
yesteryears, Caetano Abreu, released the album in the presence of Sanjit
Rodrigues, Commissioner of the city of Panjim Corporation, Fr Lucas
Rodrigues and the band leader Placido Rodrigues. (H)

OCTAVIO AND DR GHANEKAR FETED: Octavio Rodrigues and Dr Bicaji Ghanekar were
felicitated by the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar at the 37th Mando
Festival at the Kala Academy on November 19. (H)

POET RAMANI'S DEMISE: Noted Konkani and Marathi poet, Shankar Ramani,
breathed his last after a brief illness at GMC, Bambolim, on November 28, at
the age of 81. His wife, Leelabai, was at his bedside when he passed away.
Ramani, who had six books of poetry in Konkani and five in Marathi, had been
admitted on November 23  after his health deteriorated. Born in 1923 at
Verem, Bardez, he worked in River Navigation Department from 1947 to 1980
and after his retirement, he settled in Belgaum. (GT)

GOAN ON ASSIGNMENT WITH IOC: Dr Ehrlich de Sa, Director of the National
Institute of Oceanography-CSIR's one of the foremost R&D organisations, is
leaving Goa after decades of eventful and dedicated service, on an
assignment to the Inter-governmental Oceanographic Commission, which is an
arm of UNESCO coordinating global ocean research affairs. Dr de Sa will take
over as Director, training Education and Mutual Assistance and his task will
be capacity building in different littoral countries for better and
continuous improvement in understanding of the ocean. (GT)

REMY EMERGES OVERALL CHAMPION: The final day of the National Windsurfing
championships once again saw a close tussle between Remy and Derrick, with
Remy winning 2 races and Derrick winning one at Calangute yesterday. (GT)

FRANSA IN BORDOLOI SEMI-FINAL: Favourites Fransa Football Club struggled
hard to enter the semi-finals of the Bordoloi trophy football tournament
defeating sprightly Shillong XI by a solitary first half goal at the
floodlight Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. The loan goal was netted by Brazilian

RAITURA HOLD RAIA: Raitura SC, Rachol, held fancied Raia Sporting Club to a
2-2 draw at the Duler grounds in Mapusa in the GFA First Division Football
