GUIDELINES TO PRESERVE HERITAGE: The Commissioner of the City of Panaji, Mr Sanjit Rodrigues, has called for efforts to bring in heritage conservation guidelines for better implementation of heritage projects. Mr Rodrigues, who is heading the endeavour of restoration and beautification of Panjim, said this in his presentation on "Together for Panjim" at the Goa Heritage Festival, at Massano de Amorim (near National theatre), in Panjim, on November 29. (H) SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD IN SANGUEM THREATENED: The Supreme Court verdict ordering the closure of all mining activities surrounding the Mhadei and Netravali wild life sanctuaries is now reportedly threatening the livelihood of approximately 2,700 families. (WE-GT) GOA'S PAVILION AT WORLD TOURISM MART: According to the Tourism director, Mr N Suryanarayana, Goa's participation in the World Tourism Mart, held recently in London, was a success and that it would help in attracting tourists from newer destinations and more charter flights. He also said that there was heavy demand for accommodation in the month of December 2003 and early January 2004 from the visitors, who were impressed by the presentation at the pavilion. (H) COMPENSATION SOUGHT IN DROWNING CASE: Delhi High Court has directed the Central Government, the CBI, Amity Business School and the Goa government, to respond to a plea seeking exemplary damages from Amity for its negligence that resulted in the death of five students recently. The petition has been filed by the parents of the students, who drowned off Candolim beach in Goa on August 25 while on an excursion organised by Amity. (WE-GT) 'SHELTER BELT' ALONG GOA COAST: Dr Arvind Untawale, former scientist of the National Institute of Oceanography, emphasized the importance of having a "shelter belt"-a wall of vegetation along the coast to protect against future possible natural disaster like cyclones. Dr Untawale said this during his presentation at the Goa Heritage Festival. He said that it has been predicted that the Arabian Sea is also becoming more dynamic, like the Bay of Bengal, and so the possibilities of cyclones occurring in the future cannot be ruled out.
