GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
01 Dec 2003

CATAMARAN SERVICE FROM NEXT WEEK: The Goa-Mumbai Catamaran service is all
set to start its operations from the second week of December. The 216-seater
craft is owned by the Samudra Link Ferry Shipping & Cruise Services Pvt Ltd
(Sam-Link), Mumbai, and will cover the distance in about eight hours. 191
seats are in the economy class (Rs.2200 per head) and 25 (Rs.1700 per head)
are executive class seats. (GT)

SALVADOR DO MUNDO CAN BE A MODEL: Bardez's Salvador do Mundo village could
get converted into a model for rural planning and development. This plan is
being worked on by prominent architect Gerard de Cunha's firm Architecture
Autonomous. If things go as planned, it is expected to enliven the sleepy
village with the potential of placing it on the eco-tourism map, besides
generating employment for the villagers. Plans envisage a better environment
for the village, better economy, quality of life, without any major
infrastructure development like software parks. Instead the village will
have nature walks, springs, and even canoe rides to the nearby island of
Chorao, another ecologically important place. Houses here could be
refurbished, and the village will be given some identity, the prominent
architect suggested. (H)

'TEENAGERS MORE PRONE TO SUICIDES': The need for media to restrain from
sensationalizing reportage of suicides by observing discretion and ethics in
dissemination of news was stressed at the open forum on 'Media and Suicides'
organised by the Goa People's Forum in association with the Goa Psychiatric
Society at Panaji yesterday. Dr Rajesh Dhume highlighted the seriousness of
the issue and stated that in the age group 15-19 years, suicide is the
second major cause of death. (GT)

CONGRESS QUESTIONS SHRIPAD: The Congress yesterday stated that the reported
statement of Union Minister of State for Finance Shripad Naik that Goa
should be projected as the Kashi of the East and not the Rome of the East,
not only exposes his ignorance of history and geography but gives insights
to the BJP's sinister agenda of dividing society to gain votes. (GT)

BETIM FISHERFOLK OPPOSE WATER SPORTS: The fisherfolk community from
Verem-Betim will hold dharnas at the Betim jetty on Monday morning to oppose
the proposed water sports activities on the Betim river front. (GT)

30-MINUTE GOA TRIP: Lured by the sea, sand and sun, two British pals decided
to take a trip to Goa. However, their holiday in Goa lasted barely 30
minutes and that too, within the airport building. They were deported by the
same flight to UK, after both tourists were caught with an identical Indian
visa number on their passports. Two British nationals Nason Stephen James
(54) and Butler Christoper Robert (25) arrived at the Dabolim International
Airport (DIA) yesterday morning at 10.30 am by the Monarch flight from
Manchaster. Constables Santosh Pawar and Phadte attached to the Immigration
Police attached at DIA first noticed that Nason Stephen James had a fake
Indian visa stamped on his passport. (H)

MORE POLICE OUT-POSTS: The proposal for acquisition of land for the
Maina-Curtorim police station building and family quarters is being
processed by the concerned authorities with the South Goa police having
selected an area of 10,000 sq mt of land located by the side of
Maina-Curtorim main road at Sonsodo. (NT)

CRIME AGAINST WOMEN: With the rising number of cases of crime against women
in Goa, a strong demand is being made to set up separate cells to deal with
the cases of crime against women at every police station in the state so
that more and more cases end up in conviction and culprits are punished.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Afflicted by leprosy in the years gone by and fully
cured of what was once considered a scourge, they still lie isolated, at the
dilapidated hospital in Macazana. (GT)

OLD DOCUMENTS GET NEW HOME: Residents of Salcete are unlikely to get relief
quickly from years of battling mutilated and missing documents of theirs
stored with the government authorities, even though the sub-registrar's
office is to get a new home. More than 10,000 records - including torn and
mutilated land records, marriages, birth and death records, etc - which were
housed in the Margao Municipal building, since the last seven decades, stand
shifted to the new premises (at the SGPDA complex). This office has been the
major revenue earner for the exchequer, with the collections touching Rs 2.5
crore last year. The office receives 150 applications a day for issue of
birth certificates. But, with hardly any staff to sift through the mutilated
records, the touts handles the work but at a premium. (H)

BOAT CRUISE: Associacao Academica de Goa, Panaji, with the help of friends
and old members of the association coming from abroad, specially Portugal,
is organizing a boat cruise on the occasion of the feast of St Francis
Xavier. Since the capacity of the boat is limited, friends and well wishers
interested in participating in the cruise may contact on 2227096/2224876 at
the earliest. (GT)
