GOA CELEBRATES FEAST OF "GOEMCHO SAIB": Since very early in the morning today all the traffic in Goa seemed to be moving towards Old Goa where the feast of St Francis Xavier was celebrated with traditional fervour. Archbishop Patriarch Raul Gonsalves presided over the High Mass which began at 10.30 am. In his homily Archbishop Gonsalves said that we have to change life for the better, modeled on the life of St Francis Xavier, who shunned worldly pleasures to serve God and society. Blasco Colaco, Apostolic Nuncio in South Africa, and Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes of Gandhinagar, also officiated at the High Mass, concelebrated by several priests. There were masses since 4 am in the morning at the vast pandal erected in the compound of the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The pandal was packed for every mass. All along the way to Old Goa, people were seen coming on foot, singing and praising the Lord. Others came for the last few novenas and were housed in the corridor of the Basilica. Around 700 pilgrims arrived yesterday afternoon from Kolhapur and Belgaum, on foot, led by Santaji Guru, who has been making the pilgrimage on foot since the lat 23 years. KOLHAPUR PILGRIMS AT OLD GOA: A devout follower of St Francis Xavier, the middle-aged Samtaji Guru of Kolhapur has been a regular pilgrim to Old Goa for the past 23 years, along with 700-odd pilgrims, who come on foot from Belgaum and Kolhapur. They left Kolhapur on November 28 and reached Old Goa exactly at 12 noon on December 2, praying and singing in praise of the Lord and St Francis Xavier. As soon as the pilgrims reached Old Goa, they were led for an Eucharistic celebration in the pandal by the 10 priests, who accompanied them during their pilgrimage. MUCB recovery officers had filed cases against the former law minister, and MUCB director and defaulters of the bank for swindling Rs.85 lakh. In all, seven cases have been recorded against the above accused by the crime branch of the Goa Police. (GT) NEED FOR INTENSIVE PATROLLING: The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association condemned the alarming and daring dacoity at the residence of orthopaedic surgeon Dr Deep Bhandare in Krantinagar near the vicinity of the Porvorim Police Station, have demand that the culprits be brought to task. Their press note said that there is an urgent need of intensive night foot and mobile patrolling. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell on one side of the road. (GT) NRI GOA CENTRE TEAM FOR GULF: A delegation of representatives of the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre are to visit Gulf countries in the first week of December, to establish direct contact with the Goan Diaspora living in the Gulf countries and to acquaint them with activities of the centre. Around 150 'forgotten' freedom fighters from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and as far as Jammu & Kashmir will be felicitated at the hands of Vice President of India, Mr Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, at the Liberation Day function to be held at Campal on December 19. (GT) STOVE BLAST: A 21-year-old housewife, Rachana Komarpant, from Canacona was seriously burnt, while her husband sustained minor burn injuries in a fire at their house on Tuesday morning, when the stove burst into flames. Their six-month-ld infant was, however, rescued unhurt. (H) INDIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT SCHEDULE: The schedule of flight IC-865/IC-664, Delhi/Mumbai/ Goa/Mumbai sector (daily) has been revised with effect from 21 to 30 December, to operate Delhi/Goa direct as follows: IC-865 will depart from Delhi at 1.00 pm and arrive in Goa at 3.20 pm. IC-664 will depart Goa at 4.10 pm and reach Mumbai 5.10 pm. Indian Airlines also announced additional flights (B-737) from Goa to Mumbai and vice versa from 19 December to 5 January 2004 on a daily basis. IC-8865 will leave Mumbai at 1.00 pm and reach Goa at 2.00 pm. IC-8866 will leave at Goa 2.30 pm and reach Mumbai at 3.30 pm. (GT) KONKANI ALBUM "MOG": Qatar-based Konkani dramatist Wellington Coutinho, will release his first Konkani music album "Mog" on December 3, at the hands of Fr Lester Mendonsa, parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church in Qatar, along with the visiting priest, Fr Conceicao D'Silva, after the St Francis Xavier feast mass. Lyrics, voice and production of the music album has been done by Wellington. (H) GOAN ARTISTES IN KUWAIT: Wellknown Konkani stage artiste Rita Rose arrived in Kuwait last week to participate in the grand musical show "Konkani Ekvottachi Sanz" scheduled to be held there at the Indian Arts Circle, Funaitees. Rita Rose's appearance on the stage after a long gap will surely delight the audience, said Gulf-based free-lance writer Anthony Veronica Fernandes.
