ARCHBISHOP EXHORTS FAITHFUL TO LEAD SIMPLE LIFE: Archbishop Raul Gonsalves
said that a simple life in any sphere of activity we are engaged in, can
serve as an example for others in the society. Delivering the homily at the
Pontifical high mass on the occasion of the feast of St Francis Xavier at
Old Goa yesterday, he recalled that the Diocesan Synod last year had decided
to focus more on the society while also strengthening the Church. St Francis
Xavier and our own son-of-the-soil Blessed Joseph Vaz had dedicated
themselves to God and propagated his word but we can also contribute through
an exemplary life of simplicity, he said. (GT)

SPAIN KEEN ON CHARTERS: Tour operators from Spain have shown keen interest
in starting charter flights to Goa. Confirming this, Secretary, Tourism, Mr
R Raghuraman, said that at the World Travel Mart held in London last month
where Goa had put up a separate pavilion, tour operators from Spain held
preliminary discussions with the Goa delegation officials over the
possibility of starting charter flights to Goa. A couple of them also made a
mention that some tourists from Spain might come especially to pay homage to
the 16th century Spaniard-St Francis Xavier-to whose missionary zeal Goa
came to be called Rome of the East. (H)

POLICE NEED TO USE INTELLIGENCE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
said that the state police would have to put the 'intelligence factor' into
use besides their regular modus operandi, not only to put the dacoits
involved in the dacoity cases witnessed by the State, behind bars, but also
to prevent any such further incidents. (NT)

MINERAL WATER PLANT DRAINS CRORES FROM GSCB: The Goa State Co-operative Bank
Ltd, Panaji, has lodged a criminal complaint against the directors of M/s
Spring Mineral Water Trading Pvt Ltd and four sureties for cheating the bank
by not repaying the dues amounting to crores of rupees. (GT)

WORLD COMPUTER DAY OBSERVED: Every one of us must be computer literate to
face the challenges of the modern world, said the Information and Technology
Minister, Fr Francisco D'Souza, while speaking at a function organised by
the NIIT Computer Education Institute at Caritas Hall, St Inez, on the
occasion of the World Computer Day on December 2. (NT)

'DISABILITY ACT' A DAMP SQUIB: A seminar on disability was of the opinion
that the Persons with Disability Act 1995 meant to provide some relief to
the handicapped was not doing justice to the afflicted apart from hardly
being implemented. Advocate Shubhalaxmi Naik, trustee of Disha, said that
not only does the Act have a number of lacunae, but it has also been
legislated in a superficial manner, and is not being implemented. (GT)

ARRESTED FOR MOLESTING A MINOR: Gaususab Bilaji, a native of Karnataka and
residing at Corlim, was arrested at Corlim, near Old Goa, on charges of
molesting a 7-year-old girl. (GT)

TEENAGER COMMITS SUICIDE IN MARGAO: Nagesh Ramnath Shanker, a 19-year-old
youth from old market, Margao, committed suicide by hanging himself from a
rafter of his house on December 2. Nagesh had answered his Std X examination
in October last and was gainfully employed. (GT)

AYURVEDA TO BE TRIED IN ANTARCTICA: For the first time, Ayurveda, the
traditional Indian medicine therapy, will be tested in the cold climate of
Antarctica, on the expedition members. The expedition team, comprising of 55
members representing various institutes throughout the country, will leave
Goa on December 9, under the leadership of Director, Geological Survey of
India, Bangalore, S Jayaram. (GT)

WOMAN SUSTAINS BURN INJURIES: Firoza Kadri (45), a resident of Sada in
Vasco, sustained 50 per cent injuries when she got burnt in the kitchen
while preparing meals. The cause of the mishap is not yet known. A
13-year-old girl got burn she had gone to answer nature's call at an open
ground. The dry grass around the compound wall caught fire and engulfed the
girl. (GT)

GOAN PLANS GOLF ACADEMY: A Goan pro-turned coach is to start a gold academy
in New Delhi to boost the game in India. Brandon de Souza, who represented
India in tournaments abroad 17 times before a slipped disc made him leave
the professional circuits and start his own golf management company, will be
inaugurating his golf academy on the highway to Jaipur in February 2004.
Souza is "a Goan who grew up in Kanpur and Delhi and set his business base
in Kolkata". (H)

PATHWAY TO QUERIM BEACH BLOCKED: The scenic Querim beach below the famous
Tiracol fort in Pernem is out of bounds for tourists and locals as one of
the pathways leading to it has been sealed with a barbed wire. Sources in
the area told GT that unidentified persons installed a barbed wire fence
across the beach early Tuesday (December 2) morning causing inconvenience to
both locals and tourists. (GT)

KONKANI SANGEET MEET: The Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi will be holding
a meeting at the conference hall of the Corporation of the City of Panjim,
on 6 December at 4.00 pm, to appoint the organizing committee for the second
All India Konkani Music Festival, to be held in February, 2004. Those
interested in taking part in the organisation of the festival are requested
to attend the meeting. (GT)

'BMX' NETWORKS MAPUSA ALUMNI: Expat students from three of Mapusa's
prominent schools have linked up abroad, and the impact is galvanizing local
students to also network among themselves and build links among two
prominent Bardez-based schools and one college. This network is called the
BMX-Britto's, Mary's and Xavier's network-and has held its second meeting on
November 30 at St Xavier's college in Mapusa. (H)

MEXICAN FOOD: Nizmar Hotel Private Limited launched a specialty Mexican
restaurant "Chiquito" at an impressive function held at its premises at
Naikavaddo, Calangute, on December 2. The restaurant will serve authentic
Mexican starters like tacos, quesadillas and chicken wings from Hawana and
salads like fajita salad and nachos in various combinations. It will also
serve soup like talpeno and Mexican tomato soup. (GT)

MEGA YACHT TO VISIT GOA: If the CS "AIDAcara" was the largest cruise vessel
to visit Goa this cruise season, then the "Seabourn Spirit" will be the most
expensive. This five-star 'mega yacht' will drop anchor off Dona Paula at 8
am on 8 December and its passengers will take the usual quick tours that
will afford them a hurried glimpse of this state. Built in Germany, the
vessel is 439 feet-long, crewed by a complement of 150 personnel and boasts
of 110 luxurious suites. It has a passenger capacity of 208. International
Travel Bureau will be the ground handling agents, while JM Baxi will be the
ship handling agent. "Seabourn Spirit" is the fourth cruise ship to visit
Goa since the cruise season began last month with the arrival of the SPV
"Star Flyer". (GT)

JOHN NAZARETH TOPS: John Nazareth of Merces won the first prize in the
"Kantaram Competition" contest organised by the Kala Mogi, Candolim, as a
part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations. His lyrics for his song "Marekar
Duens" won him the top honours. Sunny Gama from Cortalim bagged the second
prize while Voley D'Mello was awarded the third prize for "Tumich Sangat".

parents, teachers and elders, noted Konkani writer and poet Jess Fernandes
has also asked them to use modern technology in a systematic way to attain
