A 'Mukti Din Lok Utsav' will be organized on 19th December 2003 at the Azad Maidan, Panaji on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day.
The festival is being organized by the Mukti Din Lok Utsav Samiti under the aegis of the World Social Forum (Goa). The decision was taken at a meeting of NGOs, VOs, Trade Unions and social activists which was held in the city on 26th November 2003.
Among the various organizations represented at the meeting were AITUC, CITU, T.B. Cunha Charity Trust, Peaceful Society, Goa Foundation, CARITAS (Goa), DSCSA, Goa Desc Resource Centre, PMCA, DFSC, Positive People, Child Line, Bailancho Saad, CEE (Goa) and others.
Noted freedom fighter and konknni writer, Mr. Nagesh Karmali was unanimously chosen as the Convenor of the Utsav Samiti.
The theme chosen for the festival will be 'another world is possible' in which people, not capital or profit are placed at the centre of human economic activities. A world where in the human person will matter more than the region, caste or religion. A world of peace and harmony.
On the occasion various groups will present street plays, song and dance while the stalls set up by NGOs, Trade Unions and social action groups will interact with the public on various social issues and the work undertaken by them for the welfare of Goa's community. The Utsav will be open to the public.
The Utsav will be an occasion for all social action groups and the citizens to show their solidarity and celebrate the event of Goa's freedom from colonial rule in a meaningful way. It has also been decided that such programs will be organized in other parts of Goa in the near future.
