GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 08 Dec 2003 YOUTH KONKANI LITERARY MEET BEGINS TODAY: The two-day sixth Youth Konkani Literary Conference organised by St Xavier's College, Mapusa, in association with the Goa Konkani Akademi, starts at Dr Mariano Saldanha lawns (college premises), Mapusa, at 10.30 am today (December 8). Episcopal Vicar Rev Fr Kyriel de Souza will inaugurate the conference while sammelan president Sanjiv Verekar will preside over the sammelan. Sammelan organizing committee president, principal Newman Fernandes, and working president prof Satish Bute will be also present at the meet, which will be attended by around 600 delegates. A procession will also be taken out in Mapusa at 8.00 pm. (GT)
BURGLARS DECAMP WITH RS.1 LAKH BOOTY: Margao police were jolted when a day-light house burglary took place in a at Vidyanagar early yesterday morning, in which culprits decamped with cash of Rs.50,000 and gold ornaments, all valued around Rs.1.45 lakh from the residence of Akshara and Anirudha Shanbag in Margao. (H) BICHOLIM GETS UNDP TOURISM PROJECT: Bicholim has been selected for promoting UNDP-funded venture called Endogenous Tourism. The project envisages setting up a centre depicting a mini-village. In it, "indigenous culture" of the state in all its forms-food, dance, costume, arts and crafts-will be on display. Besides, eco-friendly accommodation will also be made available to the tourists. "Endogenous tourism" is a new initiative for foreign tourists to see the culture of the State. (H) PILAR SEMINARY DAY: "A priest has to be a leader in every aspect of life," said Dr PS Zacharias, the vice-chancellor of Goa University, who was the chief guest at the all-India Seminary Day celebrations held at Pilar on December 6. Fr Seby Mascarenhas, the Rector of the Pilar Seminary, in his annual report said that a holistic approach to formation towards pioneering in Apostolate formed the core of the training of students in the Seminary. He said that the Pilar Seminary, which trains priests to serve in 27 different dioceses, crossed the 300 hundred mark of priests trained so far. (GT) 'XAVIER RADIO' AWAITING TRIALS: Radio listeners living close to the Altinho locality of Mapusa might just hear a new voice on the airwaves-Xavier Radio. This low-powered education radio station has sought a license from the Prasar Bharati, India's broadcasting regular, which recently announced plans to allow educational centres to run their own FM stations. "We've made an application, and hope that our broadcasts can reach upto 4-5 kilometres. We' ll be having a trial from December 8-10 and believe we could reach out to at least a kilometer radius," said St Xavier's College principal Newman Fernandes. (H) MANDREM DEMANDS SURVEY OF MIGRANT LABOURERS: At a meeting of the gram Sabha held recently, the Mandrem villagers have demanded that a survey of migrant labourers residing and working on various projects (construction of playgrounds, laying of telephone cables, road widening, etc) in the village, be conducted so as to enable them to get a correct picture of the actual number of migrants residing in the area. They also hope that this would facilitate providing them with civic amenities so as to make their stay in the village more comfortable. (H) RESIDENTS THREATEN TO BREAK EFFLUENT TANK: The effluent tank of Penguin Alcohols Pvt Ltd at Shristhal Industrial Estate in Canacona is yet to be emptied despite a number of inspections conducted by the officials of the Pollution Control Board. As it emanates an unbearable stench, it poses a serious threat to the residents of the surrounding areas. Irked by the attitude of the concerned authorities, the residents of Khalwade and Zamablimal have now threatened to break the tank, which they allege, is on the verge of collapse since it has developed a lot of cracks.
