Dear friends,
2000 years ago, a couple in Bethlehem facing stigma and discrimination could not find place at the inn for the baby Jesus. In 2003 we have so many people dying of HIV/AIDS and no home for them.
Freedom Foundation along with Goa State AIDS Control Society has been commissioned to start a home for those afflicted by this disease and provide a place where they will be cared for in North Goa.
As you are no doubt aware, so many men, women and children in Goa have been affected and have no where to go. NGOs have been demanding a home for a long time in Goa, and now that we have the government support we are facing difficulties in getting the right accommodation mostly due to Stigma and Discrimination.
Do you have the courage and heart to make a difference and help?
You can either rent out (Budget within 10K per month ) or donate spacious premised in the North of Goa ( preferably within 10km from Mapusa ) to Freedom Foundation.
Freedom Foundation is a Bangalore based NGO started by Ashok Rau and Karl Sequeira. Fueled by zeal to help people who badly need help, they set up a client sensitive de-addiction centre out of their own resources (only Rs15,000!) in 1992.
They soon learnt of the close link between chemical addiction and HIV/AIDS and especially the devastation it caused to the infected and their families.
Deeply affected by this they began advocating about the ills of HIV/AIDS, conducting awareness programs and researching the gravity of the epidemic. Through regular outreach programs they heard first hand of the horror stories of neglect,abuse, torture and abandonment.
Pained by the lack of comprehensive care and support for these people and alarmed by the gross misconceptions of the epidemic. Freedom established a care center for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)
The focus of attention has been the underprivileged and economically backward sections of society both from urban and rural areas. All services are therefore provided FREE OF COST.
Today its De-addiction(Substance Abuse) home has the highest recovery rate in the country at 49% while its HIV/AIDS facility is considered a Nodal Centre to be replicated in the rest of the country.
The Centre has the distinction of being named as the Ideal low-cost community-based home by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society. One of the Executive Trustees Ashok Rau, has also been nominated by the President of India as a member of the Technical Resource Group on Legal and Ethical Issues of HIV/AIDS.He is also a member of the National AIDS committee.
Freedom Foundation and Ashok Rau were awarded the first Commonwealth Award for Comprehensive Care in HIV/AIDS. There were 72 nominations for this Global Award.
