GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 16 Dec 2003 ODI SCAM: NARVEKAR, TWO AIDES INDICTED: Even while indicting MLA Dayanand Narvekar, Vinod Phadke and Rama Shankardas in the 2001 cricket ticket scam, the Pendse Commission has recommended that recognition of the Goa Cricket Association be withdrawn as long as the trio are at the helm of its affairs. The Commission of Inquiry appointed to inquire into the affairs of the GCA and the sale of bogus tickets for the One-Day International match in April 2001 has concluded that the secretive and suspicious manner in which the tickets were printed, marketed and distributed "enabled circulation of bogus tickets and had enriched the coffers of the then office bearers". CM FIRM ON NETRAVALI, MADEI: The chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on December 15, reiterated his support to the demand for the denotification of Netravali and Madei sanctuaries. "Till the time I remain in the office of CM, I assure you all the support," started Parrikar, addressing about 2500 persons from Netravali and Madei region, who travelled to Panjim, protesting the inclusion of certain villages into the Netravali and Madei wildlife sanctuaries and closure of mining operations there.The Chief Minister took a dig at Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation and wondered from where they are getting funds for the NGO. (H) SEVENTEEN HURT: Seventeen passengers were seriously injured after a recklessly driven mini-bus skidded and fell on its side at Mangueshi at 5.20 pm yesterday. (GT) TOURISM BEYOND HIGH PRICE, BEACHES: India needs to reduce it prices and promote its rich culture to compete with other prime tourist destinations in the world, according to Dutch tourism expert. "At the moment India's prices are above average and that serves as a sort of deterrent to European travellers looking for a value-for-money holiday," says Louis F Frankenhuis, chairman of the executive board of TUI NED, Holland's largest tourism company. "If we wanted only beaches we could go to Spain or Greece, they are much closer. You need to focus on India's rich culture. This country can offer a totally different experience," he opined. (GT) WOMEN, KIDS ARE VULNERABLE TO HIV INFECTION: The latest report of the Goa State AIDS Control Society on AIDS in Women and Children 2003-2004' reveals that women are vulnerable to HIV infection for biological, economic and social reasons, while children are more prone to be infected by the deadly virus due to their sexual exploitation and violence as well as lack of access to the related information and preventive services. (NT) BAN ON OVER 20-YEAR-OLD VEHICLES: The Goa government, on December 15, decided to take all old (20 years and above) heavy and public transport vehicles, including privately-owned ones, off the roads from January 1, 2004. (H) KARNATAKA'S INCENTIVES FOR GOAN BUSINESS: Karnataka has rolled out the red carpet to leading business houses from Goa to invest in several sectors, specially in tourism projects and offered several incentives. (GT) LECTURERS DENY CHARGE: Three lecturers of Goa University's Microbiology department strongly denied the charge of harassment leveled against them by a micro-biology student. Former head of department, Dr Joe D'Souza, lecturers Dr Sarita Nazareth and Irene Furtado, who were directed by the Court to be present, declined to tender an apology vis-a-vis the student, Sharvari Naik's charge, stating that such an incident had never occurred and it would never occur. (GT) GOAN LAWS TO GO DIGITAL: The State government has commenced the process of transferring Goan laws from print form to the electronic form, and subsequently they will be available on Ds and website for easy access to the members of the public, particularly those in the legal field.A total of 25,000 pages are proposed to be digitalized and made available on the website. (GT) PETROL, DIESEL PRICES HIKED: Despite a drop in crude oil prices in the international market on December 15, state-owned oil companies last night announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices by more than a rupee from midnight last night, after maintaining the price line for the past two months. An official announcement by the oil companies said that petrol in Delhi would be dearer by a rupee at Rs.32.70 per litre as against Rs.31.70. Similarly, diesel will also cost a rupee more in Delhi at Rs.20.73 per litre against Rs.1973. MCDONALD FOR WATER LEAKAGE SURVEY: The State Cabinet on December 15 approved the appointment of Dalal Mot McDonald Private Ltd as technical consultants to survey and detect the leakage of water from underground pipelines in the State. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that on an average about 40-45 per cent of water was being wasted due to supply through old corroded pipes. The new technique of using copper conductors in pipeline help to detect leakage by use of detector leakage on the surface level and does not require digging of roads. (GT) ENGLISH IN GOA: It is one of those ironies that Goa, a region never rally ruled by the British, has taken to using the English language to a very large degree. Leave aside the vested interests who tell you otherwise, or the emotion-charged debates which take snipes at this 'foreign language'. Fact is that, in the part forty years and even a little before, this language has come to be widely accepted in the world of commerce, the courts, law, industry, bureaucracy, education and even culture.Goa has long been a migration-oriented society. With English taking on global ascendancy for a range of complex reasons, it was only to be expected that Goans would take to this language. Expat Goans-whether returning from Africa, or headed for the US, Canada, the Gulf or Australia-have clear linguistic preferences. Fernandes, 44, is survived by his wife Doris and 6-year-old son Melroy.
