Goanet meets in Goa: December 27, 12 noon and January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). See you there! ------------------------------
An open invitation seminar was hosted by the Goan Welfare Society (and we thank GWS for the same) for the visiting delegation of Goa Government NRI-Goa Facilitation Center in Kuwait at the Carlton Tower on December 13, 2003 for compiling major NRI concerns to be presented in the Gomant Vishwa Sammelan / Goan NRI Convention scheduled on January 3-5, 2004 in Goa.
During the question-answer session, Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha raised two issues, which are endearingly crucial for most of the Goans, Konkani lovers and more importantly to the Tiatrist fraternity.
Replying to the query of Konkani language being made a volatile issue by the political parties every now and then, Mr. Chandrakant Keni, Chairman NRI-GFC, assured that Konkani language has been accepted and declared the official language of Goa. Elaborating further, he said the Chief Minister cannot make certain official declarations for the fear of being misconstrued and misinterpreted by vested interested and as well due to the pressures from members of his and other political parties.
KGTS in its crusade for the rights and privileges of the Tiatrist raised the issue of deprivation of State Cultural Awards to Goans settled outside Goa. Mr. Pramod Shetye, Chairman of Goa Tourism Development Corporation enlightened the audience about the recently instituted NRI Awards for six categories including Art and invited portfolios from the eligible candidates so that they could be evaluated and nominated for the awards.
Clarifying the difference between the State Cultural Awards and the recently instituted NRI Awards, the KGTS Members reminded the Team that while prodding the issue of posthumously bestowing a State Award on the evergreen legend, Mr. Alfred Rose, even the Chief Minister accepted his unawareness about any such Awards and restrictions applied to Goans settled / living abroad.
The NRI Team assured the audience of presenting these issues along with other concerns during the convention and invited representation from the Goan diaspora through their associations, clubs or individually to be routed through NRI GFC or directly during the convention.
