Dear Mr. Godfrey, Thanks a lot for your detail explanation for the problem. You have done a superb job in giving clear picture of many of the things. In Mangalore for the religious reason priest used Konkani Language. Thus Konkani flourished. Konkani was in Mangalore, Karwar, Shimoga, Chickmagalore, Bellari, Belgaum Dioceses. But later Konkani was replaced with Kannada in four dioceses namely Shimoga, Chickmagalore, Bellari, Belgaum. Thus now the second generation is away from Konkani. They do not know to read and write Konkani. Thus it is a fact that priests indirectly were in the mainstream for the growth of Konkani and they are the one who caused for its death. Now Konkani survives only in Mangalore and Karwar Dioceses. But one promising fact is that the readers for our weeklies get increase everyday because there is a craze of reading Konkani. Recently one more new weekly is started from Mumbai. Another weekly will be started from January. One more fortnightly will be converted to weekly shortly. Thus what I feel is priest should create environment for the growth of Konkani and they should unite Konkani people of Karnatka, Goa and Maharastra.
