SEX-PILLS ON A NEW CLIMAX: With the tourist season reaching its peak, local
chemists along the coastal area are piling up stocks of sex pills. "We are
seeing more demand for these pills as the season is progressing," said a
pharmacist, who did not want to be identified. He further says, "The reasons
are purely because a lot of young domestic tourists come to Goa and use
these pills while they are enjoying their holidays, and the foreign tourists
finds these drugs cheap compared to the rates in their country." (H)

'PRODUCE QUALITY FILMS': Film producers in Goa should not restrict
themselves only to Konkani or Marathi movies, but should produce better
quality Hindi-English movies and reach out the wider section of cine-goers,
said Governor Kidar Nath Sahani during a meeting with the office-bearers of
the Film Producers Association of Goa. (GT)

the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Though the
Curti-based Goa Dairy procures some 90,000 litres of milk every day, its
local production is only 45,000 litres per day. Officials say they intend to
increase this figure to 60,000 litres per day over the next two
years.Official figures say there are over 180 dairy co-operatives spread
across Goa serving as a link between Goa Diary and the farmers. (H)

ANJUNA CELEBRATES 400 YEARS OF ST MICHAEL CHURCH: Folk dancers from
Dadra-Nagar Haveli; a fashion parade of nappy-clad toddlers and other
cherubs; a day for widows and widowers; a live Christmas crib; a Prakash
Yatra in which the light of spirituality will joint community to community;
a spiritual meet of priests and religious; the celebration of the
Incarnation, with non-Christians.these are only some of the many events that
will form part of the program that the parish of St Michael's, Anjuna, has
planned to mark the end of its quadrennial celebrations. The parish is
bringing out a full-colour, coffee-table presentation of the history of St
Michael's parish. Written by Anjuna's own well-known historian, Dr Teresa
Albuquerque with photographs by her husband, Mathew, the book will mark a
landmark just not for the parish, but all of Goa can be proud of. (Fr
Ubaldo Fernandes, sfx, in GT)

designing a little museum to display the many historical and religious
artifacts that the Church and parish of St Michael has accumulated over the

Teresa and Mathew Albuquerque unearthed a number of these priceless pieces.

'COME CLEAR ON HELMET RULE': The Motorcycle Action Group has urged the State
government to clarify whether the proposed implementation of helmet rule
from January 1, 2004, will include the pillion rider and the children
traveling on two-wheelers. MAG convenor Premanand A Lotlikar has stated that
the government has failed to provide a decent public transport system,

December 22 from 6 to 7 pm. Indian Express correspondent Raju Nayak will

LAND-REFORM IN THE NEWS: In the past week, a Panjim ruling from the high
court bench has thrown open once again the debate over Goa's
far-from-efficient land reforms. The bench struck down amendments of 1993
and 1995 made to the mundkar act. It noted that these were "unjust laws" and
amounted to "freezing or pegging down of the market price" of the mundkar's
dwelling house, which has "absurd consequences"..For far too long,
land-reforms in Goa have been a way of ensuring that Peter is robbed to pay
Paul. What's worse is that while the big landowner is capable of taking care
of his own interest, or carrying on in court for years, it is the
medium-sized owner, or the expat Goan, who is likely to lose a home or
property due to the opportunistic manner in which laws have been enacted in
the State. (Edit in Herald)

WHAT DO NRI GOANS WANT? The overseas Goans are not satisfied with what they
see in Goa. They are repelled by the culture of corruption that pervades
Goan society and cannot relate to the acceptance of these standards. The
bureaucratic processes endemic in Indian methodology puts off many NRIs from
investing locally. Many NRIs after years of service abroad long to settle in
the land of their origin. But for many reasons, they get disheartened and
give up.If Goa's infrastructure is improved, it will motivate many NRIs to
come back. But like other States of India, politicians have their fingers in
every pie and nothing runs professionally or free of political interference.
(Aires Rodrigues in Herald)

POWER ADDICTION: BANE OF DEMOCRACY: Goa has become a model for studying the
sociology and psychology of power. I am trying to identify a pattern which
is emerging from our socio-political and cultural fabric. For obvious
reasons it is difficult to name any individual or institution. Names and
designations are not important. What is important is the new power culture.
The struggle for non-political or quasi-political power in Goa is intense.
It is not limited only to the co-operative banking sector, unions or NGOs.
The struggle shows a rising number of power-hungry individuals who could be
called 'power addicts'. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT)

FEAST TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MUSIC: Music may be claimed by many as Goa's way
of life, but for its desirable development it needs study, research and
scholarship.Yes, song is also forever in Goa, even though politics and
governments during the erstwhile Portuguese rule and post-Liberation, did
cast a pall of darkness over the territory, but music and song lifted its
soul by composers of Mandos, Deknies, Fugides, Indian Film music, sung for
example by Lata Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bonsle, and tiatr cantaram
(songs) by Minguel Rod, Remmie Colaco, C Alvares, Sharon, Alfred Rose, Kamat
de Assolna, Cecilia Machado, Anthony San, Young Chico and others, and by the
ever-haunting of music of Chris Perry and Frank Fernand. (Lambert
Mascarenhas in NT)
