Bosco,
There was no imposture involved in the title and they did not "give themselves titles of doctors". That was the title that the Portuguese dental faculty granted them: Medico-Cirurgiao. There was no case of "mis-leading" anyone, nothing fraudulent about it. Is it not correct, Jorge? I would have liked to refer to my good uncle, Tio Mouzinho, but he is no more.
In Scandinavian countries dentists are called "tandlakare" (tand = tooth; lkare = doctor, healer). In the Germanic countries, I would believe, both titles go in at once: "Herr Doctor" and then the teeth part.
What is, indeed, misleading is the analogy of British doctors' title of "Mr" with barber-descent. I have come across such allusion but meant as a woodehousian pun. I don't wish to go into the semantics of the British usage at this moment. The tree and trimings await assiduous attention ...
"Little knowledge", egad!

This is in reference to Cornel Costas email wherein he mentions that Goan
dentists give themselves titles of doctors which ismisleading. He mentions the
UK where dentists are not allowed to call themselves doctors. The fact is that
surgeons (medically qualified) in the UK are adressed as Mr because the
profession has descended from the barber -surgeon. The dental surgeon being in
an allied speciality and a fellow of recognised faculty of the Royal College of
Surgeons is also addressed as such. In fact recently the British Dental
Association decided to give the UK dentist the option to use the Mr or Dr prefix.
Dentists by virtue of the specialised medical training are genuine practioners
and deserve to use the title as is common practice internationally -USA, Europe
included.
Little knowledge can be dangerous Mr Da Costa!!
