Goanet meets in Goa: December 27, 12 noon and January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). See you there! ------------------------------
Dear Cornel, You have rightly put the issue in the proper perspective. These days it becomes difficult to find a medical practitioner in any directory peppered with the prefix "Dr." before the names of doctors, dentists, veterinarians, agriculturist, horticulturists,Ph.Ds in psychology, psephology, pedagogy, divinity, proximity and infinity. The Portuguese hailed even a primary school teacher as "professore" but the person so saluted never put "Prof" before his or her name. Today, even a "Teacher Grade I" in a Higher Secondary SCHOOL or a "lecturer" in a college gladly adds the prefix to his or her name....and some even consider it an insult to be addressed otherwise! In my own fraternity, one fine day the All India Federation of Agriculture Technologists decided to prefix the Dr. as Vets who pass from the same Agriculture Universities do so with aplomb. Our association printed visiting cards and gave to all members with the Dr. prefix so that no one would feel shy to use the title. Mohammad bin Tughlaq could not have done it better. My current problem is how to "de-doctor" my name: no mean task in a society happy to boost your ego and hope that you reciprocate. It is difficult to check this tyope of inflation, too. If more persons would use a suffix of their qualifications like BDS, MDS, Ph.D., B.V.Sc. it would make life much easier. At least one would know a 'doctor' from a 'dogtor'...otherwise it will be the "Poseidon adventure" once more. Viva Goa. Miguel [Comfortable with my first name] original message[trimmed]..... I have no quarrel with those who have advanced qualifications and who are entitled to use "Dr." However, I draw the line when incorrect usage is made of professional titles like doctor and professor in Goa particularly. I therefore reiterate my contention that dentists with a bachelor's qualification are not doctors and should not use such a title in Goa or anywhere else for that matter. > I remain, > Ever so humbly, > > Cornel DaCosta, PhD London, UK university academic, and former American > university professor. > > --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
