Goanet meets in Goa: December 27, 12 noon and January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). See you there! ------------------------------
If the Rushdie novel in question is "The Moor's Last Sigh" it cannot be used for any historical basis: no
2o%, no % at all.
The book is of course deliciously rabelaisian, with gargantuan feats of captivating literary extravagance.

Subject: RE: Goan History in travel books.
Response: A reading of Goan history in travel book is always tricky!
Over the weekend, a physician friend of mine originally from India visited with me about Amchi Khobor - Our News - Inside Goa. The friend had an innate interest in Indian History. So I sought his opinion about the section of Goa's history in the book. His response was that his (only) source of knowledge of Goan history (prior to reading Amchi Khobor) was from Salman Rashdi's novel of the Portuguese arriving to India. So there is a trend even in suave intelligent circles to combine 20% history and 80% fiction and call it "the whole story". Obviously as Goans we should know 100% facts of Goan history in a continuum rather than bits and pieces, here and there.
Travel books do give useful information of a particular site or monument and bring ancient and modern history to life. These books have do not give the continuum of events and the background to the measures that makes history remarkable and fascinating. There are good accounts of Goan History in History books and on the internet (non-fictional sites).
Recently based on three Goan fictional novels there was a doctoral THESIS written for a Professorship on the Diaspora Goan by a non-Goan. In-ni-it charming? :=))
