GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 30 Dec 2003 MUNDKAR-TENANT ASSN TO MOVE SC: The Goa, Daman and Diu Mundkar-Tenant Association has resolved to file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court of India praying that the recent order of the Bombay High Court striking down amendments to Mundkar Act be stayed. The Association president Narayan Naik said that the quashing of the 1993 and 1995 amendments to the Act would adversely affect the interest of Mundkars in the State. The confusion existing presently in context of purchase price of a dwelling house has caused panic amongst two lakh Mundkars in the State, he said. (GT) NRIS CAN ENROLL NAMES IN VOTER LIST: Thousands of seafarers and other non-resident Indians can heave a sight of relief as the Election Commission of India has ruled that they are eligible to enroll their names in the electoral list and cast their vote in the elections. In a brief communiqué sent by the ECI Secretary, SK Kaura, to the Chief Electoral Office, Goa, the Election Commission clarified that NRIs are eligible for enrolment in the electoral list as per sub-section (IA) of Section 20 of the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1950. (H) GOA TOURISM ON A ROLLER COASTER: Goa Tourism experienced a roller coaster ride of success and failure during 2003. The year began on a negative note with the Israelis expressing their fears of a security threat during the New Year celebrations. Fortunately, the year was ushered in peacefully, with revelers partying under the watchful eye of security and intelligence agencies-though post 9/11 fears ensured that fewer people boarded charter flights to the State. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome took its toll throughout Asia and virtually brought the continent's tourism to its knees. Goa was not far behind. (GT) SAWANTWADI TOURISM FESTIVAL: The Sawantwadi Municipal Council is all set to commemorate 125 years of its inception with a 5-day "Sawantwadi Tourism Festival 2004" beginning from the 1st of January. The festival will have "Heritage and Handicrafts" as its main theme. (GT) MAJOR MOVE TO SPEED UP MOPA WORK: In a major step towards expediting work on Mopa international airport, the State Steering Committee on Monday (Dec 29) granted approval for the signing of a management services agreement with International Civil Aviation Organisation, an UN body specialised in civil aviation matters. (H) GOVT DROPS LEASE PACT FOR OCEANARIUM: The government has terminated the lease agreement signed on 18 December 1996 with Goa Oceanarium Private Limited for the construction of an oceanarium complex at Miramar. The government had leased out 32,176 sq mt of land to the company for setting up the project within a period of five years. (GT) WOMAN ADMITS TO MURDERING HUBBY: Angela Diniz, prime accused in the murder of her husband Floriano, has reportedly admitted that she murdered her husband, police said. (H) OPEN SPACE IN PENHA-DE-FRANCE: Open spaces are in plenty within the panchayat area of Penha-de-France which could be utilized for various developmental works, stated the sarpanch of the village, Mr Umesh Phadte. (GT) CALANGUTE, COLVA VPS URGED TO HOLD WASTE DISPOSAL PROGRAMMES: The Directorate of Panchayats has requested the sarpanchas of Calangute and Colva to conduct awareness programmes regarding the segregation of waste and vermicomposting. The programmes will primarily target the producers of garbage in their jurisdiction-hotels, housing co-operative societies, pathological laboratories, maternity homes and other such establishments besides also involving the public. (NT) BUS KNOCKS DOWN PEDESTRIAN: Ashok Shetkar, 35, of Dicarpale was knocked down by a bus coming from Quepem to Margao yesterday. Shetkar suffered head and leg injuries. (GT) SHIVLINGA AT BISHOP'S PALACE: A group of persons appeared at the Bishop's Palace at Altinho and allegedly sought to take away an object of archaeological importance lying within the compound. The authorities had no objection to surrendering the object, which the group claimed was a 'Shivlinga', provided the request was routed through official channels. (GT) POWER FAILURES IN CALANGUTE, CANDOLIM: Endless garlands of electric lights have set 'Panaji Ablaze', but frequent power failures along the tourist belt of Calangute and Candolim are causing severe hardships to residents of the area. Power failed at least thrice last night and for one full hour yesterday (Dec 29) from 9 am to 10 am. Calangute also experienced a black-out for the entire second half of Christmas Day.
