I agree with Teotonio R. DeSouza and other readers that the word Goan Diaspora has a negative connotation, It brings to mind a similarity to the Jewish Diaspora arising from progroms, while indeed no such historical similarity exists. Goan emigration through the ages has been mainly an economic one. I say mainly because there have been other sub elements like political oppression, desire to escape from caste and religious prejudices, family disgrace and other minor reasons. Therefore what word would adequately describe this mass movement. Is it the "Goan Dispersal"? That would not do factual or romantic justice. For one, "dispersal" would be a connotation for being blown away but would not adequately describe the gathering together again of Goans in such large numbers as in the UK, Canada, and the USA, not to mention the temporary repopulation in the Gulf countries. For another, the word 'Dispersal' is decidedly plain. Would our wordsmiths put their brains in high gear and come up with a single word that could, like Churchill's Iron Curtain and Nehru's Third World, in context, do justice to the Goan Diaspora?
