GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 12 January 2004 TREMORS FELT IN CANACONA: The villagers of Poinguinim and nearby areas in Canacona taluka yesterday (Jan 11) experienced mild tremors even as the Indian Meteorological department said that light disturbances were recorded in their chart. According to the villagers, the earthquake like tremors were experienced by them at round 2.20 pm and most of them immediately ran out of their houses for safety. The Observatory, however, could not find anything like an earthquake on their chart and suspected that disturbance could be due to the use of explosives in the nearby mining areas. (GT)
GOA'S HIGH RATING ON TV SHOW: Goa has something more to crow about-a high rating in a Report Card put out by the SAB TV. Goa is already ahead of the nation in some terms and would like to set itself higher targets than the rest of India, the Chief Minister suggested, in an interview telecast repeatedly on Sunday (Jan 11). It's already ahead of some 2011 targets, the Chief Minister told the interviewer. SAB TV showed visuals of different cultures and religion, visiting tourists, and the local "peacefulness". (H) PROPERTY GUTTED IN PANAJI: The overheating of an electrical motor in the aquarium shop in the Panaji Municipal garden opposite Manvins Hotel, caused a loss of Rs.16.5 lakh on 10 Jan night. Alifanio Mendes, who owns the aquarium, complained that he suffered a loss of Rs.2.5 lakh, while Nav Ratan Electric Company owner Narbath Singh of Rajasthan said that he suffered maximum loss, which was estimated to be about Rs.14 lakh. (GT) COW SHEDS ABLAZE: In a fire accident reported at Pipalwada-Amona in Bicholim, two cowsheds were gutted claiming the life of one animal while another animal in the shed suffered injuries. (NT) CITY WASTE FOR MINE DUMP: A mining company (Dempo) and an NGO (Goa Foundation) are coming together in a new role to use garbage to nurture the afforestation of a devastated patch in a mining area. The waste from the Mapusa Municipality is being transported to the site (in Bicholim) and composted to make organic manure for the regreening process. At present, Mapusa Municipal Council does not have a proper site to dispose off the waste, so a part of the compostable variety will go to Bicholim. (GT) COCONUT PLUCKING EASIER NOW: Coconut plucking may no longer be a formidable task in Goa, now with coconut plucking devices being promoted by the Department of Agriculture. Some 60 people were trained this year to handle the coconut plucking device. Spraying of coconuts, identification for pests and cleaning of coconut trees atop was also a part of the training programme. The device costs Rs.1,100 but was given free of cost to the trainees. (H) GAMBLING ACTIVITIES ON THE RISE: In the recent weeks, festive season is in full flow in the Pernem taluka with fairs being the order of the day. While it is a joyous occasion eagerly awaited by young and old in the village, the occasion itself provides an ideal opportunity for gamblers to be at their 'business' after a long recess. Sadly, gambling has now been invariably associated with fairs. (GT) PANJIM, GARDEN CITY OF GOA? The Corporation of Panaji has dedicated the year 2003 to the maintenance and greening of this beautiful capital city. The following members were elected as the new managing committee for 2004-2007: president Victor D'Mello, substitute president Clemente D'Souza (Vithal), treasurer Seraphian D'Souza, substitute treasurer Valerian Carrasco, attorney Savio Carrasco and substitute attorney Gregorio Braganza. (H) BOOK RELEASED: The Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Mr Vishwas Satarkar released a book "Jitya Kudichi Devi Shree Mandodari", written by Mr RV Phadte, at a function held on the banks of the Mandodari Lake, in Talewada, Betqui, on January 11. The book traces the history and folk tales on Mandodari Lake and origin of people of surname Phadte, who have settled at Talewade Bequi coming from Verna during the colonial rule. (NT) THE AGITATION THAT BROUGHT IN 'HALF TICKET': On January 11, 1979, the students of Goa created history. Goa became the first state in India to declare a blanket 50 per cent concession in bus fare on any intra-state route. The decision negotiated by the State government and private bus operators with the agitating students leaders was unique because the operators were not under any compulsion to reduce the fare. The Kadamba Transport Corporation was not in the picture at that time.The student leaders were well read, honest, excellent orators, organizers, writers, communicators, negotiators and strategists. They were not na�ve to be used and exploited by the politicians. It's called "The Goan Cook's Guide" and was published way back in 1937. By this time, the publication was already in its fourth edition, and was put out by BX Furtado and Sons, based at Kalbadevi, Bombay. Across its 399 pages, there are some 1202 tightly-packed recipes of food from across the globe. This book is by Pedro Damian Dias, and on its first page is proudly displayed a photo of memento presented to him by TRH George Prince of Wales and Victoria Mary Princess of Wales in 1905-06. (Edit in Herald) RAIA PANCHAYAT'S FREE COURSES: The educational field in Raia has received another shot in the arm with the inauguration of 'Skill Training Programme Courses' on 8 January. Under this programme training would be imparted in 'Car A/C Mechanic' and 'Mobile Phone Repairing'. About 15 candidates each would be selected for the courses and the training would be imparted by the qualified staff from Fr Agnel Ashram, Verna. (GT) SCULPTURES BLACKENED: Some unidentified miscreants blackened clay figurines in a small garden, situated behind the Secretariat, on Jan 10 night. The sculptures had been recently renovated as part of the beautification plans in the city.
