Goa Sudharop presents the awards annually to Goan individuals, groups and non-governmental organizations for their outstanding work towards betterment of Goa and Goans. The Fellowships, which reflect Goa Sudharops continuing commitment to certain key development issues, carry a citation and a cash amount in order to further support their efforts. This year's winners are: 1. Govind Parsekar, who has opened a new chapter in organic farming in Goa by converting a 15,000 sq.mtrs. plot in Mandrem into an organic paradise, proving that total organic farming can succeed in Goa. 2. Serena Mascarenhas, who founded AL-ANON (Goa) 18 years ago, which has over the years functioned as a strong support group for the relatives and friends of alcoholics, similar to what AA does for alcoholics. 3. Nisarga Nature Club, an environmental group active in Goa, with a mission to plant a million trees in the new Millennium and who, for more than a decade of its existence, has made tree plantation a movement by instilling in the general public, the value of tree culture. Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc. will also, for the first time, present a Lifetime Achievement Award to 80 year old Percival Noronha, who founded the Association of Friends of Astronomy in 1982 and which now maintains the only Public Astronomical Observatory in Goa. A staunch activist for the protection of Goan buildings and monuments, he was instrumental in 1983 for launching the Goa Chapter of the Indian Heritage Society in order to awaken the Goan people to the diversity and richness of our Art, Architecture and natural resources. A well known authority on Indo-Portuguese history, tourism, heritage conservation, architecture, furniture and urbanization, Percival has several papers to his credit and was invited by several foreign universities to lecture on topics related to Goan culture and heritage. Goa Sudharop honours him for devoting more than one third of his life to the single-minded pursuit of popularizing amateur astronomy in Goa and for being the motivating force behind hundreds of youngsters who have taken to it. Other past Goa Sudharop Fellowship Award winners include Dalit leader Dadu Mandrekar, Rajendra Kerkar of the Mahadei Bachao Abhiyan and Prof. Isabel de Santa Rita Vas of Mustard Seed Art Company. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
