Did you know that asteroids are likely to plummet on to planet Earth and probably destroy us from 14.6.2014; that of the only 6% sun energy that we receive just 4% is consumed by trees and that the remaining 2% is responsible for the sweat and thirst; that the pipal banyan and Ashoka trees were worshipped in olden days in India and some continue to this day.
Well these were some of the disclosures made in slide presentations and acting by the recepients of a) Goa Sudharop Lifetime Achievement Award the 75 year old ex Chief Secretary of the UT of Goa Daman & Diu and founder of the Association of Friends of Astronomy Mr Percival Noronha and his amateur members; b) the Goa Sudharop Fellowship 2004 Awardee Nisarga Nature Club an environmental Non governmental organisation having a mission to plant million trees in Goa and inculcate the tree culture in Goa , and c) the participants viz;students of B.Ed Nirmala Institute of Education,Eco Club who staged a small play to presevere trees apparently ridiculing the Corporation of City of Panjim efforts to illuminate trees for the just concluded festive season by "nailing illuminating lights on the trees along the India's longest promenade along the Mandovi river in Panaji to spruce up the capital city and invite droves of "desi tourists" or Bharatiya "tow rists" under the 365 days holiday tourism promotion slogan. The other recipients of the Goa Sudharop Fellowship 2004 Awards were ex teacher Govind Parsekar of Mandrem in Pernem taluka North Goa an activist in organic farming and Ms Serena Mascarehnas an activist supporting friends and relatives of alcoholics. The function evoked a surprisingly poor response for reasons apparent viz the function was not prominently announced, the second day of the two day long kite festival held for the second year in succession in Goa was being held at Miramar Beach in Panaji. Traditionally Panjimites can expect to attend such award distribution functions only if nothing else is happening and preferably on a weekday but never ever on a Sunday and Olav Menezes seems to be in agreement with this view. Earlier after an over half hour delayed start Dr Ligia Giese of the Advisory Board of the Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc USA which is a non profit organisation founded in March 2000 to help development of Goa and Goans worldwide, gave a brief presentation on "Focus on Women and Child Health Care in Goa". The function was co-ordinated by Olav Menezes The Caritas Complex sound system however as usual played spoil sport and it is hoped that better acoustics be used to provide an effective sound system. The function however had a delightful ending with Goan traditional folk dances the "dekhni" presented by Crosscraft Entertainment group which demonstrated an excellent & class performance by the youths. Mr Parsekar had on display products of his Organic Farm for display at the venue. from the Caritas Hall St Inez Panaji Goa Godfrey J. I.
