GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 20 January 2004 STATE OKAYS CORPORATISATION OF POWER: The Goa cabinet yesterday (Jan 19) "approved in principle" the proposal to corporatise its electricity department. Chief Minister Parrikar said the report on the Power department' s corporatisation prepared by SBI Caps, has been accepted. Mr Parrikar said the interests of all existing electricity department employees would be "absolutely protected" but added that no such assurance can be given on new employees after the department is corporatised. CHARGESHEET FILED AGAINST KHALAP: The CID/Crime Branch has filed a chargesheet in Special Court, Panaji, against former Union minister and then chairman of Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Ramakant Khalap and nine others in connection with the sanctioning of loans to the Bannerghata Farms. (GT) MUNDKAR ACT TO BE AMENDED: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday said the Cabinet has proposed that the Mundkar Act be amended in the forthcoming assembly session to protect the interest of mundkars vis-à-vis land prices in the wake of the recent High Court decision. (H) CM TO PRESENT BUDGET: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that the next session of the Goa Legislative Assembly would begin from February 16, which will see tabling of the budget for the year 2004-2005. (NT) RIBANDAR TO HONOUR ALFRED ROSE: Ribandar will honour renowned Konkani stage artiste, the late Alfred Rose, at the concluding function of the grand centenary celebrations at 7.30 am near Fonduvem Chapel, Ribandar. Rita Rose will receive the award, according to programme co-ordinator Adv Aires Rodrigues, who said that over 100 artists from Ribandar will also be felicitated on the occasion. A dinner and dance will follow the function with Ribandar's band "Purple Rain" in attendance. A souvenir is also being released on the occasion. (GT) RELIEF FOR FARMERS: The government has resolved to waive off interest of Rs.34 lakh on loans taken by 608 farmers to bulldoze earth for irrigation purpose by using tractors. (GT) MGP UNDECIDED ON ALLIANCE: Former chief minister, Shashikala Kakodkar, whose MGP is part of the coalition government, said in Panjim yesterday that her party "will play its role" in the ensuing parliamentary polls-elections which have already stirred a spate of activities in the political party officer here. Ms Kakodkar said her party had not yet received any concrete proposals or feelers either from the BJP or from the Opposition Congress Party. (H) MARGAO PAY-PARKING FEE CUT: The Margao Municipal Council has passed a resolution to reduce pay-parking fees in the city. Two-wheelers will now be charged 50 paise per hour, four-wheelers Rs.2 and monthly passes will cost Rs.50. (GT) 200 TREES FELLED: Around 200 trees, comprising kindal, matti, cashew and other variety, were allegedly cut down from private and forest land at Tamnemol-Monem, Cotigao, in Canacona taluka. The whole exercise of cutting down the trees was done clandestinely allegedly to make the way for the construction of a road. (H) GOA KITE FESTIVAL: A GRAND SUCCESS: Kite festivals should be popularized as it propagates the message that the sky has no boundaries and is accessible to all, opined Ajay Prakash of Nomad travels, Mumbai, the organizers of the Goa Kite Carnival. In all, 15 international participants including a Goan took part in the second international Goa Kite Carnival at Miramar. The permission given by the Poinguinim panchayat for the proposed beach shacks and coco-huts at Galgibaga beach in October 2003, has been revoked in a monthly panchayat body meeting on January 16.
