Dear Santosh,

Where did you get 1541 as the date of establishment of Inquisition in
Portugal? It was 1536.

I have here a published letter of Dr. Jernimo Diaz dated 3.12.1539. The
text is included in a recent book on the Origin of the Inquisition in Goa
(1539-1560). The author is a functionary of the National Archives of Lisbon.
Dr. Jernimo Diaz is writing from Goa to the King of Portugal thanking him
for the job and confidence placed in him. He refers to a new-Christian
(crypto-Jew) burnt in Goa for his heresies and blasphemies. Warns the King
against large-scale clandestine immigration of the Jews to India. Informs
about threat from Rumis and Turks to the Portuguese in India. Recommends *in
bello pax* policy. Requests the King to treat his letter most confidentially
to avoid any backlash against him.

What should make one of this letter in the National Archives of Lisbon as
against what you have quoted from Priolkar?

Teotonio R. de Souza
