In response to the message below, I can quote from an article I published in 1981: *The voiceless in Goan historiography*, in book entitled *Indo-Portuguese History: Sources and Problems*, edited by John Correia-Afonso, Oxford, Bombay, 1981, pp. 114-131.
The information about the number of victims of the Goa Inquisition is found in the following para on p. 120: "All that is left of the documentation of that institution are a few stray files in the National Archives of Lisbon and an inventory book in the same repository giving a complete list of the condemned and acquitted from the time of its inception till 1774. The total had reached 16,172. It included persons of different nationalities, but nearly three-fourths were Indians almost equally represented by Christians and non-Christians. Many of these Goans natives were hauled up for crossing the border and cultivating lands in the mailand." I could add here that most Goan natives were frightened and sent home with warning of harsher consequences if they relapsed. But there were cases of persons who relapsed 4-5 times! These harsher consequences in quite a few cases consisted of lashes and hard work in galleys or pounding saltpetre in the gunpowder factory at Panelim! Lots of gunpowder was then manufactured in Goa for the Portuguese gunboats and forts in Africa and Asia! In one list of 1664 (which I may publish in the near future) there are dozens of Moidekars, both men and women, arrested and some sentenced to 5-7 years to hard work in the gunpowder factory. They include brahmin ganvkars Lobos, Cunhas, Correias, Gamas, Souzas, Nazareth, etc! The cream of Moidekars!? All accused of Hindu practices! Some hope for the Moidekar candidates for being canonaded?! ---------- From: "Gilbert Lawrence" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks Teotonio for translating the letter from Mestre Geronimo Dias and posting it on the GoaNet. If you have any more specific information on the exact numbers of Goan and non-Goan Catholics and Hindus "burnt at the stakes" kindly place it on cyberspace for our education and analysis. Of course you run the risk of our analysis which may not agree with yours. But that will enlighten all parties to this episode of Goa's history. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/1503/teo_publ.html AVISO Esta mensagem (incluindo quaisquer anexos) pode conter informao confidencial para uso exclusivo do destinatrio.
