CHARTERS FROM LISBON TO FLY-IN: A major exercise was undertaken with tour operators of Portugal to start a charter flight from Lisbon to Goa next tourist season. There was tremendous response from tour operators for the Goa Evening at the Lisbon International Travel Mart which ended on January 23, according to the Tourism Director, Mr N Suryanarayana. More than 200 tour operators participated and got their queries answered from the Goa representatives. (H) PANJIMITES CARE ABOUT.: Do Panjimites give damn about the International Film Festival, or restoration of heritage buildings? A telephone survey conducted jointly by "Panjim Plus" and "Gomantak Times" has turned out some interesting answers to these questions and more. While 84 per cent respondents agreed that restoration of heritage buildings was a good thing, only 51 per cent support the International Film festival slated to be held in the city. (GT) PLAN TO REHABILITATE BAINA SEX WORKERS: In a significant development, the Goa State Women's Commission and the Karnataka State Women's Commission have decided work jointly for the rehabilitation of commercial sex workers of the Baina red-light area. The GSWC chairperson, Ms Swati Kerkar told "The Navhind Times" that the sex workers given a chance, would like to give up the flesh trade and go for an alternate, more respectable mode of livelihood. (NT) CARNIVAL FEST: The four-day Carnival festivities in Panjim are scheduled to begin on February 21. The float parade this year will depict traditional floats as the festivities are aimed at reviving the Carnival of yester years. While last year 70 floats participated in the parade in Panjim, the Panjim Carnival Committee has sought for greater participation this year. (H) MUSIC FESTIVAL VENUE NAMED AFTER ALFRED ROSE: The Konkani Sangeet and Natak Academi announced that the venue of the second All India Konkani music festival, which will be held on 7 and 8 February at EDC grounds, Patto, will be named as Alfred Rose Nagar, in honour of Goa's legendary melody king. Alfred Rose, who passed away on 21 October 2003, had attended the first all India Konkani music festival in Margao in February 2002. He was honoured by the Konkani Bhasha Mandal for his immense contribution to Konkani. (GT) "APARANT MAAND" UNDERWAY: The second "Aparant Mand 2004", billed as Goa's biggest handicraft, art and cultural exposition, is underway at the Bodgeshwar Devasthan temple grounds in Mapusa. Out of the 120 stalls, nearly 100 have been put up by local artisans. (H) ARRESTED FOR AMPLIFIED MUSIC: The police booked a case against Jove D'Silva of Verem for playing amplified music at Osborne resorts, Calangute, on Thursday. He was, however, released on bail. (GT) NUVEM SARPANCH QUITS: The Sarpanch of Nuvem, Pasquinha Colaco, has quit office. Sources said the Sarpanch had expressed her willingness to quit office since she was unable to devote more time to the panchayat everyday. (H) ARPORA SARPANCH VOTED OUT: The Arpora-Nagoa sarpanch, Mr Agnelo D'Souza, and deputy Sarpanch, Ms Sarika Diukar, have lost the confidence motion by 4-3 votes at a special meeting held at the village panchayat office on January 23. Mr Salim Sayyed, Ms Anita Fernandes, Mr Shankar Vaigankar and Mr Pundalik Naik had moved a no-confidence motion against the sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch. It is learnt that Mr Sayyed will stake claim for the post of sarpanch while Ms Fernandes would be the deputy sarpanch. (NT) POWER DEPT TO BE UNBUNDLED: The state Power department will be unbundled into three separate organisations, one of which will definitely be a Public Limited Company, while the other two could be corporations. The entire process of corporatisation of the department has been scheduled for completion by 19 January 2005. (GT) KIDNEY RACKET: The arrest of Mumbai-based nephrologists Dr SP Trivedi by Mumbai police on Thursday, has unearthed a kidney sale racket which had even spread to Goa and three other states. Dr Trivedi would approach patients in need of kidneys and strike a deal with them. He would then contact Shivanand Kamath, who is now in police custody and had allegedly run the kidney racket in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab for the last six years. The agents told the police that they were paid hefty commissions to induce poor people, specially pavement dwellers and beggars, into donating kidneys. The racketeers earned as much as Rs.2 lakh for every operation. (H) FOREIGNER KILLED: An unidentified foreigner was killed in a road mishap at Anjuna early Friday morning. He was found lying unconscious at Gaudi-Anjuna and a motorcycle was found lying nearby. (H) SCOOTERIST DIES: Francis Xavier (53), a resident of Majorda who was proceeding on his scooter towards Margao along with a girl as his pillion rider, died in a tragic in tragic circumstances at Betalbatim on January 23. While Francis was proceeding on his scooter, a branch of a tree broke and fell on his head, causing his death. The girl, however, survived. (NT) 'GIVE NRIS RIGHT TO VOTE': Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president and MLA Luizinho Faleiro yesterday demanded that the Non-Resident Indians should be given the right to vote even as the Chief Election Commission clarified that seamen would be treated as 'ordinary resident' in the electoral rolls. (GT) "MS ADONIA" TO VISIT GOA: Even as authorities prepare to receive the feasibility report on the proposed passenger terminal at Mormugao, the largest ship yet will visit on January 25. "MS Adonia", a 856-foot long luxury cruise liner belonging to P&O Cruise Lines, will drop anchor at Mormugao Port Trust at 8 am with more than 1,800 passengers aboard. The vessel will be the largest to visit Goa since the cruise season began in November last year. The five-year-old British liner is visiting Goa en route to Colombo, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila and Australia. Built at a cost of $300 million, the vessel is a virtual floating city and offers its passengers a whole range of facilities comparable to a full-fledged hotel. (GT) HINDI TEXT BOOK DISTORTS HISTORY: History will have to be rewritten if information pertaining to the great revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad published in "Gomant Bharati" Hindi textbook for standard five is to be believed. Azad, long after his martyrdom in 1931, has been portrayed to be a "Satyagrahi" and a participant of the "Quit India Movement" in 1942. Making a mockery of the great revolutionary, the book goes on to quote further, "He suffered silently for the freedom of the country along with other Satyagrahis of Mahatma Gandhi." (GT) BAILON HEADS CONG EDUCATION CELL: Prof Dr Bailon de Sa, an eminent educationist, was appointed as chairman of the Goa Pradesh Congress Education Cell yesterday. Luizinho Faleiro said that Dr de Sa has been authorised to expand the cell by inducting more educationists and also to appoint in turn district and block-level cells. He said the cell became important due to the present government's interference in the functioning of the Goa University and other educational institutions. (GT) RAUT TO RESTRUCTURE MGP: With elections to the Lok Sabha looming large over the country's political scenario, election fever seems to have gripped the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. The working president of the MGP, Pandurant Raut, came down heavily on the ruling BJP for emotionally blackmailing the Goans in inducing them to vote for the latter while simultaneously raising taxes. Declaring that the MGP has carved out a place in the hearts of Goans and will rise like a phoenix from its present position, he attributed this to the overwhelming support his party still enjoys among the Bahujan Samaj. (GT) SILICON ELECTRODES IN HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM: Professor Kevin Warwick of the University of Reading, England, said during a lecture at the Goa University that a computer has an edge over humans in the areas of mathematical ability, memory, extra senses, communication and a multi-dimensional perception. In an experiment to link humans and technology together, and to tap this huge potential of the computer, the Professor has had an implant of an array of 100 silicon electrodes fired into his nervous system. These electrodes were then connected to a computer. He thus had an electrical connection from the brain down the nervous system, and these signals were picked up by a computer. This implant procedure was carried out by four neuro-surgeons, for the fist time on a human being. (H) GOAN FILM FOR MUMBAI FEST: A Goan film "Eka Sagar Kinara" (A Sea Side Story) has been selected for the 8th International Film Festival to be held at Film Cinema Theatres in Mumbai from February 3 to 9. (H) RUI NEEDS ASSISTANCE: Rui Menezes, 46, a resident of Patto, Ribandar, is ill with both his kidneys becoming non-functional. Doctors have advised a major kidney transplant which Menezes is unable to pay for, though mediclaim will provide Rs.1.5 lakh.
