Second Annual KONKAN FRUIT FEST The first Konkan Fruit Fest held at the Heritage Precint,Campal-Panaji, adjoining the Francisco Luis Gomes Municipal Garden from 9 to 11 May, 2003, was a runaway success. The event presented by the Botanical Society of Goa with the partnership of the Corporation of City of Panaji and the active support of the ICAR, Goa Directorate of Agriculture, Regional Fruit Research Station-Vengurla[Konkan Krishi Vidyapeet] , the University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad and the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa. It will soon be time to host the 2nd Konkan Fruit Fest. The availability of funds will determine the scale of the event. The dates chosen in consultation with the CCP are Friday 30 April to Sunday 02 May,2004. We hope to have the support of the State Government agencies involved in fruit crop cultivation, processing and export as well as the Tourism department/corporation and the TTAG. At the end of all the speeches and the festivities, it is money that determines survival and growth. We have survived to plan for another day. The BSG has proved its ability to host such an event last year. Its credentials should no longer be in doubt this year. A lot of homework has been done. Lessons have been learnt from the shortcomings of the first year. Constructive criticism has come from many sources. We will respond to it. All competitors will be requested to make at least a dozen fruit of the same tree available for those that would like to taste the particular cultivar/variety. It will be made available at an "asking price", varied as per demand and reacting to market forces. We are in a global village and the seller has the right to an opportunity cost. We will not keep a percentage for ourselves as some hags do. No one will be forced to buy a mango, so do not complain as some persons did at the cost of kites recently at Miramar. You can bring a mango from home and eat it at the venue. We will not charge the equivalent of 'corkage' chargeable at an event or venue. Alternatively, find a graft of the same variety, plant it, grow it, harvest the fruit and find out the worth of one mango of a specific variety for yourself. A large number of fruit growers and processors have been contacted in Goa, Sindhudurg and even in Kerala. Processors and traders have also been contacted. A loose network has been created over the past six months. In the next three months, while the blossoms on the mango trees turn to ripe fruits, it is time for us to do likewise. The efforts must bear sweet fruit. Let us team up...for the second Konkan Fruit Festival. It is not just about mangoes; we want kantam, jamblam, churna, mangustao, rambutan, brindao/kokum, sapota/chikoo, cashew/kaju as well as their juices, squashes, wines, liquer, vinegar, jams, jelly, toffee, fudge, burfi and artifacts made from their wood, shells, etc. Plants of various fruits and of flowers that can be commercially grown amidst fruit trees will be on sale. Come join us to focus on fruits of our 'aprant'....the boundary-less land called the Konkan.
