THE BIG FIGHT (NDTV 24X7) 24/Jan/2004 It was a pleasure watching last night's "The Big Fight" with BJP's Gadkari, Congress's Chagan Bujpal and the Super Cop Julio Ribeiro having it out, literally. The pleasure was generally replaced by consternation and anger at the way the two politicians were conducting themselves infront of the national viewers. It cannot be said that either of them are fit to be in any state or national politics as they do not possess the basic sense of a debate. What the national viewers observed last night was a local galli brawl, a shouting match, one trying to be heard over the din made by te other until the anchor had to request them both to have a glass of water to cool their tonsils. My feeling is that most of the viewers will never know what they were trying to say. And I am sure both of them will be nursing very sore throats for atleast a couple of days.
In my time in school, we had debates. And we were trained through watching the seniors debate, wherein the speakers ( pro-topic) made their point and the following speakers (anti-topic) countered. Interrruption of the speaker was not allowed. If the Chagan Bujpal vs Gadkari fight last night is any indicaton, the same galli-brawl like atmosphere must be prevailing in the State Assembly sessions. No wonder our politics stink and we are going from bad to worse. It is hoped that the recent Mock-Assembly undertaken by Goan Colleges at the State Assembly, Porvorim, teaches the next generation political leaders in the proper conduct of the debates in the Legislative Assembly.
