Parrikar advocates end to Konkani, Marathi animosity. Sunday Herald - 25 Jan, 2004
Konkani-Marathi imbroglio would be taken to its logical conclusion: CM Navhind Times- 25 Jan, 2004. COMMENTS: We are given to believe that Manohar Parrikar considers Goans to be fools. It is apparent that he is playing a double role, of late. No doubt that languages are languages and must be treated as such , studied, spoken, written etc. But he cannot consider Konkani and Marathi as equals. Marathi is a developed language. And it is the language of Maharashtra. Never mind that the Portuguese allowed and even suffered it to spite Konkani for their own reasons. Parrikar is promissing funds for the promotion and development of Marathi in Goa in collusion with the mergerists who have lost their faces with the merger issue. Is he doing as much to promote Konkani, which is the official language of Goa? All government run primary schools must be in one language and one language only. That is Konkani. Marathi, along with other languages must prosper on their own accord, privately. It is interesting to note that all Goans , irrespective of whether they are Hindus, who mostly study in Marathi Medium primary schools or Christians and Muslims, 95 + percent of who study in English and other medium primary schools, all speak Konkani at home. Only the Maharashtranised Goans and Maharashtrians in Goa speak Marathi at home. Parrikar must remember that playing with fire is dangerous. Goans have nothing against Marathi and its promoters. Goans have every right to feel sidelined when its Chief Minister is playing a double role and continues to be conniving with the mergerists who believe that their dream is still alive. Parrikar may be smart. But he must remember that Goans know what a back-door merger is, and what it looks like. They also know to detect the aroma of the ELECTION air.
