GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 30 January 2004 COUPLE CRUSHED TO DEATH: A couple from Vasco (Ganpat Bandekar, 52, and his wife Poona, 43) was crushed to death when their scooter collided against a KTC bus near Chicalim panchayat ghar on January 29 around 3.45 pm. Police said that the bus driver, while overtaking, hit the scooter and the couple came under the rear wheels of the bus. (GT)
MIXED RESPONSE TO BJP'S YATRA: The Bharatiya Janata Party's much-hyped "Atal Yatra" drew contrasting responses in Velim and Benaulim-the two constituencies in Salcete represented by ministers, Filipe Neri Rodrigues and Mickky Pacheco in the BJP-led Parrikar government. While the Minister for Water Resources, Filipe Neri, saved the day for the BJP as the yatra wended its way in his constituency, his colleague and Sports Minister, Mickky Pacheco, completely stayed away from the saffron procession. The Vigilance Department here has recommended disciplinary action against Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Gokuldas Naik following his inordinate delay in providing information to an applicant under the Right to Information Act. (GT) GOAN TRAWLERS WILL HAVE TO COMPETE WITH FOREIGN VESSELS: Goan trawlers could well be forced to compete with Thai fishing vessels in netting fish wealth within the Indian territorial limits. The decision of the Union Agriculture Ministry to allow Thailand to enter into joint fishing ventures in the Exclusive Economic Zone for sourcing raw materials for overseas factories, is expected to be a major blow to the impoverished Indian fishermen. (H) ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AT OLD GOA, VALPOI: The Archaeological Survey of India, Goa Circle, is planning to conduct intensive and detailed explorations at Old Goa and Valpoi to identify new sites of archaeological interests. The explorations have been planned following a discovery of moats (trenches) and a fortification wall at Old Goa deemed to have historical importance, sources said. Explorations at Valpoi have also been planned particularly for rock engravings and pre-historic remains. .searching for newer sites to provide crucial inputs while attempting to trace migration routes and trade activities with pre-historic Goa from across the borders. Valpoi has been rich in rock engravings and pre-historic remains. (H) JAPANESE CITIZEN KILLED IN ROAD MISHAP: In a self-inflicted accident, a Japanese national, Mr Naumi Tushmoni (45), died on the spot in a road mishap along the Anjuna-Vagator road on Wednesday morning. Tushmoni was riding a motorcycle when the vehicle skidded causing the fatality. (NT) NCP DECRIES DR SILVANO'S SUSPENSION: The Nationalist Congress Party yesterday decried the suspension of Goa Medical College, head of the Forensic Department, Dr Silvano Sapeco, and called for his immediate reinstatement. Accusing the government of political machinations in the "erroneous" autopsy examination conducted by Dr Sapeco in the recent Floriano Diniz case, NCP spokesman Surendra Furtado alleged that one of the ministers had intervened in ensuring the suspension. (H) IFFI: OVERSEAS BIDDERS: The overseas construction companies have submitted pictorial overviews of various international multiplexes and screening houses in Australia, Argentina, France, Greece, United Kingdom and Korea during the pre-tender qualification presentation given to the Goa government recently. The companies are learnt to have stated that the internationally acclaimed cine-projects existing in several countries could be replicated in Goa keeping in mind the cultural heritage of the State and in a manner so as to blend with the local natural surroundings. (GT) MICROCHIPS TO REPLACE EAR-TAGGING OF ANIMALS: The State government is likely to be the pioneer State in the country to utilize the microchip identification system for farms instead of old ear-tagging of animals under the Kamdhenu Scheme. The new system comprises placing a microchip below the earflap with the help of a specially designed syringe. The microchip later on gets embedded in the muscle around the ear and cannot be removed. (GT) NCP CRIES FOUL ON ELECTORAL ROLLS: Even as the chief electoral office says the publication of the electoral rolls will be done on 3 February, 2004 (nearly a fortnight behind schedule), the NCP has now joined the Congress Party in alleging that it was denied copies of the draft rolls for perusal. (GT) BIRDS TO BE MONITORED: Secretary (Animal Husbandry) Amit Yadav yesterday stated that the birds imported in the state were being monitored even as there was no instruction from the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry, New Delhi, regarding the 'Avian Flu' (bird flu) which has hit some of the Asian countries. (GT) SHORT-CHANGING GOA: For long, the State has spoken abut levying an entry-tax on vehicles coming to Goa. This makes sense. Given that the resident population pays heavily for the infrastructure (according to the Congress which ruled us for much of this time, we are the most heavily-taxed State). And also because the people here have to put with the inconveniences of playing host to a population far larger than its own size. But does the State have the political will to enforce it? Arguments that there are legal impediments to implement the same, are just that-arguments. They're clearly meant to block action, while a whole lot of other laws have been passed when it was politically expedient to do so.
