Is it possible for a Mapusa resident to obtain a birth certificate that's registered in Panjim in his city itself and that too in a jiffy? Not at this point of time, but sooner rather than later, it will. For, by March-end, the State government is hoping that the project to inter-connect the eleven civic bodies will be operational. Minister for Power and Urban Development, Digamber Kamat, told Herald that any resident in Goa will then be able to obtain a birth certificate from the nearest municipality promptly. The facility is being worked on by through the National Informatics Centre (NIC) as part of the government's effort to make its e-governance effort beneficial to the public, Kamat said. (H)
MAPUSA FEST: THE LIVELY ART BEAT OF MAPUSA: The run up for the Carnival in Mapusa this year takes off with a three-day Mapusa Fest of art and culture from 13 to 15, which will be held at Feira Alta, near the Pergola. The Fest comprises of three evenings of rich art, besides fun and entertainment. According to the organizers, Mapusa's Fest can be surely different from the run-of-the-mill festivals by being more participatory at all levels: planning, execution and evaluation. (GT) DUDHSAGAR RAIL TOURS FROM TODAY: Eco tourism in the State is set for a big boost with the rail tour to Dudhsagar Waterfalls planned by Goa Tourism Development Corporation starting from January 31. The train will depart from Vasco Railway Station at 6.40 in the morning and arrive at Margao station at 7.25 a.m. The train will make halts at Sanvordem, Collem stations, before reaching Dudhsagar at 9.15 am. The train will return from Dudhsagar at 2.30 p.m. GTDC officials say the introduction of the tour train will facilitate tourists and Goans, particularly students from schools and colleges, besides other institutions for excursions. The carrying capacity of the coach is 108 seats. The fare is fixed at Rs 400, which is inclusive of breakfast and lunch. (H) BIRD FLU SCARE HITS GOA POULTRY SALES: The bird flu scare has now gripped health-conscious Goans. Estimates show that poultry sales has dipped by around 25 per cent in the State, even as big-time traders have stepped in to re-assure the public that Goa, like the rest of the country, continues to be free of avian influenza. Philip Valadares, Chairman of the Goa unit of National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC), informs that reports of the flu plaguing several countries and the Centre's ban on import of poultry products has hit sales in Goa. According to Valadares daily poultry sales in Goa have slumped by around 25 to 30 per cent in the last three days. Inquiries at the SGPDA market complex, which houses over half-a-dozen chicken slaughter houses reveal the same story of falling sales. Goa's average consumption of chicken per day is put at around 5000 kilograms, depending on the season. While the average consumption of eggs per day is around three to four lakhs. (H) ANJUNA GANG-RAPE: ONE NABBED, TWO OTHERS ABSCONDING: After some meticulous investigations, Anjuna police seems to have finally zeroed in on three suspects, in connection with the gang rape of a 22-year-old Swedish woman at Anjuna on January 25. While 21-year-old Merlin Chandappa was nabbed on Thursday night from a hide-out at Kharevaddo-Vasco, the other two accused Palami Swami and one Mahesh are absconding. According to Anjuna police, Chandappa has admitted his involvement in the heinous crime. While officials at the Anjuna police station declined to comment on the investigations, sources at the police station informed that based on the description provided by the victim, police identified one of the accused to be notorious criminal Palami Swami, who recently escaped from custody after a jail break. (H) LEOPARD IN SINQUERIM: A leopard prowling around on the hillside at Sinquerim is keeping locals, forest department officials and others on the edge. Inhabitants of houses dotting the hill in this hamlet of Candolim claim to have seen the fleet-footed animal at night. (GT) CHILD AMONG 3 INJURED IN PORVORIM MISHAP: Three persons, including a child, were injured in a road mishap involving three vehicles at Porvorim on January 29 night. Porvorim police said a rickshaw (GA-01-Z-5497) proceeding towards Mapusa, took a right turn near the panchayat grounds, when a truck (CG-04-ZC-2362) rammed into the rear of the rickshaw. The rickshaw driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with an oncoming Kinetic scooter (GA-03-A-5811).The occupants of the rickshaw, Suzan Fernandes (31) and her daughter Caroline (2), both from Pilerne, as well as the scooter pillion rider Vijay Gawas (18) were injured in the mishap. (H) A TALE OF SIX BRIDGES: The historic Rua de Ourem creek flowing into the Mandovi river in Panaji will tell a tale of bridges with half-a-dozen of them scattered within a radius of half a kilometer. Beginning with the Old Patto bridge, flanked by the footbridge on one side and the new Patto and two Mandovi bridges on the other side, another 'very new' patto bridge will be erected in the near future. (GT) MISSING CUNCOLIM BOY FOUND DEAD: Five days after he went missing, Cuncolim police recovered the body of 15-year-old Damodar Shrikant Kore of Sanvorcotto-Cuncolim under the Uskiniaric (culvert) on January 29. Police said the boy's mother, Jayshree had complained that her son, a Std VIII student, had left the house at about 11.30 am on January 25 and since then, he was untraced. Police said the boy went missing after his mother had reprimanded him for quarreling with his younger brother. The highly decomposed body was seen floating at the culvert and was later sent for post mortem. (GT) MORMUGAO'S GARBAGE PROJECTS GETS OFF: The Zero Garbage Town launched by the Mormugao Municipal Council got off to a rousing start on Friday, with enthusiastic participation from school children of schools in the port town. The Zero Garbage Town under the Vasco vision was launched by Urban Development Minister Digambar Kamat in the morning. The day began with around 2,600 students drawn from 25 different schools along with over 60 staff members from the respective schools walking from different parts of the port town. Dr Sardesai was speaking at a special function organised to carry out deliberations on the recently released five Konkani music albums titled, Lharan, Tuje Vin, Novem Voros, Kaljachya Donyan and Shrungar. An English-Konkani dictionary edited by Dr Manoharrai Sardessai, a book on Konkani idioms and phrases by Manohar Pai Dhungat and the second edition of English-Konkani-Hindi vocabulary edited by Chandrakant Keni will be released on the occasion.
