MUSLIMS TO CELEBRATE ID TODAY: The Muslim community all over Goa is all set to usher in Idul-Zuha (Bakri Id)-the Muslim festival of sacrifice on Monday. About 2 lakh Muslims in the State will offer special prayers at around 9.30 am at their respective Idgahs. (H) POLITICIANS EYE DEVASTHAN POLLS: After a tussle for the control of Comunidades, some of the activists of political parties have now set their eyes on the elections of the Devasthan committees scheduled on 8 February. The tenure of the new managing committees will be for a period of two years. (GT) DEMAND FOR WITHDRAWAL OF SPECIAL HOLIDAYS: The Goa Headmasters' Association has said that the list of public holidays circulated by the Director of Education contains special holidays. This type of holidays are not meant for educational institutions. The GHA demanded a review of the holidays and to declare these special days also as public holidays for the year 2004 for all educational institutions. (NT) CM OPENS VICTOR APOLLO HOSPITAL: Apollo Victor hospital will be recognized as the super speciality hospital in the state of Goa, said Dr Suresh Amonkar during the inaugural function at Malbhat in Margao on February 1. The Rs.28-crore venture was inaugurated formally by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. (GT) MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR GOANS: The government is working out on a scheme which would cater to provide 100 per cent insurance for the medical facilities of the Goan people, stated Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while inaugurating the super speciality Apollo Victor Hospital in Margao on February 1. (H) GOA'S LURE DRAWS STREET CHILDREN: Goa is turning into an attraction not only for tourists but also for street children? Says Gregory D'Costa of the Margao-based NGO, Jan Ugahi, "Street children are a growing phenomenon in Goa.Goa is an attraction especially during the tourist season, when they hang around the tourists and get money," says D'Costa. The Konkan railway has made traveling easier for them. Any major festival will see a large influx of this population. Most of these children are victims of some kind of violence, and have either run away from home or are trying to support their family in some way. (H) SANGUEM VILLAGES THIRST FOR WATER: Despite being in the vicinity of the Selaulim dam, which supplies water to entire South Goa district and beyond, the areas in and around Sanguem are facing an acute shortage of drinking water. (GT) BAD ROADS: Youth from Fatorda have threatened to launch a morcha if roads in the area are not repaired within a week. Citizens are agitated over the prevailing condition of roads and have demanded good quality roads so that they cant ravel safely. (NT) NEW CEMETERY FOR VASCO: The parishioners of Our Lady of Candelaria Church, Vasco, will have a new cemetery of their own from February 2 after the formal inauguration by Bishop Raul Gonsalves. The cemetery has been a long standing demand of the parishioners. According to details available, Vasco has a total Catholic population of around 21,000, Baina 4500, Desterro 3500, and Mormugao Sada 3100. (NT) BHOOMI PUJA HELD AT ALFRED ROSE NAGAR: The Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi carried out the Bhoomi Puja at the Alfred Rose Nagar, EDC grounds, Patto, Panaji, on February 1. Goa's well-known folk artiste Timoteo Fernandes and eminent tabla player Pundalik Kalangutkar attended the function. Tomazinho Cardozo, chairman of the reception committee, said that the unity of the Konkani people could be strengthened by its music, which could transcend the barriers of caste, creed and script. (GT) WOMAN SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: Ms Auradha Rukeror, a 50-year-old woman, succumbed to burn injuries in her house on February 1 at Gaunsavaddo in Mapusa. She is reported to have burnt herself. It has been released to mark the 400th anniversary of the village church of St Michael.
