GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 04 February 2004 CM HAILS BUDGET: Reacting to the interim budget presented by Union Finance Minister Jaswant Singh as an extremely strong budget for the economic growth of the country, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said it would further boost Goa's efforts towards infrastructure development, tourism and as permanent venue for holding International Film Festival of India 2004. CONGRESS FLAYS BUDGET: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president and MLA Luizinho Faleiro yesterday alleged the interim budget was nothing but throwing dust into the eyes of the people in view of the oncoming Lok Sabha polls. (GT) CONG, NCP BURY HATCHET: In a major step towards forging a multi-party alliance against the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, veteran politician and NCP chief in Goa, Dr Wilfred de Souza, and Congress president in Goa, Luizinho Faleiro, came together under a common platform for the first time after five-and-a-half years for an electoral tie-up. Dr de Souza addressed a press conference jointly with Faleiro calling for unity of secular-minded political parties to defeat the BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. (H) 1,429 VOTERS' NAMES DELETED: Though 9,949 new voters have been added to the electoral rolls after the latest exercise of summary revision in North Goa district, the total number of voters had gone down by 4,680 due to a large-scale deletion of 1,429 voters. The biggest number of deletions was 2,032 in Aldona constituency, followed by 1,605 in Tivim and 1,555 in Calangute. Other segments with 1,000-plus omission of names are Siolim, Mapusa, Saligao, Taleigao, Santa Cruz and Cumbharjua. (GT) PILGRIMS AT ANJEDIVA CHURCH: Hundreds of Goan devotees planning to visit the historic Anjediva island at the Navy's Sea Bird site off Karwar for the feast of Nossa Senhora das Brotas Church on February 2 were aware of restriction to their entry. Although devotees-for the first time in five centuries-now had direct access to the island with the newly constructed breakwater from the mainland to Anjediva, obstacles certainly came aplenty. A three-hour wait in the hot sun outside the Navy gates to gain entry to the island and an hour-long walk across the breakwater filled with rubble, were some of them. About a hundred dejected Goan devotees returned home, without entering the island. (Melvyn Misquita in Herald) PAID WITH HIS LIFE: Remedios Almeida (43), a resident of Aldona, who had sustained serious head injuries in an assault, succumbed to his injuries at the GMC Hospital on February 3. In an incident of assault at Aldona on the night of 21 and 22 January, three suspected accused assaulted Adwin Fernandes near a bar. As Remedios tried to intervene, the trio turned their ire on him and assaulted him with bottles causing serious head injuries. (GT) COP ARRESTED: A police constable was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a burglary case reported in Panjim. Sources said that Suraj Salkar, a constable attached to the Panjim police station, was booked after it was revealed that some stolen property was tacked at his residence. (H) NEW PLATFORM TO FIGHT CORRUPTION: The "Nitoll Jinn Trust", is a newly formed body to act as a watchdog for prevention of corrupt practices in the State. Describing Goa as one of the most corrupt states in the country, Mr Arvind Bhatikar said that the one-day workshop to be held on February 7 on "Curbing Corruption", jointly by the Trust and the International Centre, Goa, will focus on countering corruption in government institutions, public sector undertaking as well as the private sector. (NT) WHAT AILS KONKANI AND MARATHI? Speaking at the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan recently in Panaji, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar admonished Konkani speakers since a paltry 50 government primary schools were imparting primary education in Konkani, from a total of 950. Apart from extolling the verdict of the 1967 Opinion Poll, Konkani activists have failed to censure successive governments for their abject failure to implement the Official Language Act. There is not much consolation either for Marathi activists, who have failed miserably in halting the rapid decline of students at the primary school level. The bulk of both the educated Hindu as well as Christian communities continues to patronize the English language much to the loss of both Konkani and Marathi. (Nilesh Khandeparkar in GT) WASTED OPPORTUNITY: In 1987, the official language issue, as it did elsewhere in the country, quickly turned into an emotive one. One of the promises was that official language status would protect jobs for the locals. Of course, this simply didn't happen. Jobs in Goa's already-bloated bureaucracy kept getting sold in a state where corruption has been a growing concern. Nothing stops anyone settled in Goa from learning a language, even it is only for the sake of a job. Instead of using language as a tool to exclude, it would have been more realistic to simply use the local language to make the administration more responsive to the average citizen of Goa. That didn't happen. (Edit in Herald) CYBER PROJECT AT DIVAR SCHOOL: A project to make the students and the villagers computer literate was inaugurated at the Lady of Divar School, Piedade, recently.
