Interesting. This debate has come a full circle.

In Kerala, Jose is pronounced like Jos. Juje Siddi actually spells his 
name in that manner -- of course it's a Lusitanised name, and its origins 
are clear. But when you say 'Jose' to a Kannada-speaking official who's 
registering your birth (somewhere in rural Karnakata, not far from Goa) 
this is what you guess.

Much like when the Portuguese came along, and heard names like 'Bicholim', 
'Divar', 'Margao', 'Panjim' etc.

This, of course, is not an argument to change all names. It's just a case 
to accept whatever we have. Mistakes can happen on all sides. FN
