In the past, as soon as Goan Christians woke up in the morning, they would greet each other in Konkani by saying DEU BORO DIS DIUM (Good morning) to which the reply was: JEZU KURPA DIUM (May Jesus grant you grace). Likewise, as soon as they left the house and came across people on the streets, they greeted them similarly and received a reply as indicated above. Yes, there was a relationship between that greeting and reply and the Church, and really in those days when one began the morning in the name of God, everything would end on a good note because there is always Gods blessing on such deeds.

Nowadays, no matter how many times we say Deu Boro Dis Dium, the response is always Good Morning in English, and instead of good things happening, sometimes the whole day turns out to be a disaster. It is only us, Goans, who are ashamed to greet each other in our mother tongue. We have read many a times on GoaNet and still read articles against outsiders who have settled in Goa, but these are the people who speak our language and make the best use of it. As soon as they step on Goan soil, they try to learn Konkani language. Of course, through ignorance instead of saying Deu Boro Dis Dium, they say Deu BORI Dis Dium. Whatever it is, at least they make an attempt to learn the language, whereas we Goans feel shy to speak our mother tongue, and to show off that we love foreign language more than Konkani, we proudly speak only in English and patronize it.

Within no time, this month seventeen years elapsed since Goa Government accepted and declared Konkani as our mother tongue, but till now we have neither given it due respect nor embraced it. I am not against speaking English language, but we should not degrade our Konkani language. Instead of leaving it outside, we should welcome and give it prominence in our household, accept it as part and parcel of our life and make it the queen of our hearts. Konkani is our mother tongue not anybody elses. Therefore, we should not feel shy to speak it. Whenever one visits any country or enters any of Indias States, one can notice that the residents speak their own language. So, why only we Goans lag behind in this respect?
Aichean ami nicheu korum-iea amchi apurbaechi Konknni bhas xinkonk ani hea borea kamanchi survat Devachea nanvan korum-iea dhor sokallim amchea kuttombantleank, soirea-daireank, seza-samareank ani toxench ixttank/ixttinink vhoddkun mhunnon DEU BORO DIS DIUM ani zabab diun JEZU KURPA DIUM. Effective immediately, let us make a resolution to learn our beloved Konkani language, and let us begin this good deed in the morning in the name of God by wishing every member of our families, relatives, neighbors and friends DEU BORO DIS DIUM with response JEZU KURPA DIUM. Similarly, whenever we meet people in the afternoon, let us wish them saying DEU BORO DONPAR DIUM (Good Afternoon) Reply: DEU TUKAI DIUM (May God give you the same). In the evening, let our greeting be: DEU BORI SANZ DIUM (Good Evening) Reply: DEU TUKAI DIUM (May God give you the same), and the greeting at night would be: DEU BORI RATR DIUM (Good Night) Reply: DEU TUKAI DIUM (May God give you the same).
