BIRD FLU OVER THE CARNIVAL FEST: The Bid Flu over the Carnival Fest. And it
even 'claimed' its 'first victim in Goa' and left a family weeping for the
man in the 'coffin'. The spectacle of chicken and birds did not add to the
colour and pageantry of this year's floats parade. "We are free from bird
flu", the message on one floats, clarified all doubts. Though the organizers
claimed a record number of 88 floats, somebody whispered it was the election
year, there were only a few spectacular floats.Goan percussionist, Bondo,
draped in the robes of King Momo waved merrily from atop the Bharat
Petroleum 'Mak' floats, surrounded by his 'entourage'. (WE-GT)

FLOATS FAIL TO IMPRESS: Panjim may have witnessed a huge turnout at the
Carnival parade in the city on Saturday (Feb 21), but the majority of floats
seems to have belied the expectation of the public. An estimated 70,000 odd
people thronged the roads to watch the revelers in their masks make merry,
restrained from joining the merriment by the barricades put up for the
occasion. (H)

POOR QUALITY OF FLOATS WORRY TOURISM DEPT: The Tourism department seems to
be worried by the poor quality floats at the much-hyped Carnival

quality of floats should have been definitely better," the Director of
Tourism, Mr N Suryanarayan, said when quizzed about the Carnival parade on
Saturday. (H)

path-breaking orthopaedic surgical procedure in the State, a team of senior
surgeons and anaesthetists successfully conducted a major spinal surgery on
Carol Killinary, a 63-year-old UK national, at the Apollo NUSI Hospitals and
Research Centre, Cuncolim, recently. An earlier surgery conducted two years
ago in the United Kingdom on Carol to solve the same problem, was not of
much help. The grueling 9-hour surgery enabled her to turn around on her
hospital bed the very next day, something she was unable to do for the major
portion of the last two years. Bismark Martins, the CEO of Apollo NUSI,
stated that while the surgery performed would cost the UK patient 15,000
