FLOATS FAIL TO IMPRESS: Panjim may have witnessed a huge turnout at the Carnival parade in the city on Saturday (Feb 21), but the majority of floats seems to have belied the expectation of the public. An estimated 70,000 odd people thronged the roads to watch the revelers in their masks make merry, restrained from joining the merriment by the barricades put up for the occasion. (H) POOR QUALITY OF FLOATS WORRY TOURISM DEPT: The Tourism department seems to be worried by the poor quality floats at the much-hyped Carnival celebrations in Panjim. "I am not fully satisfied with the floats. The quality of floats should have been definitely better," the Director of Tourism, Mr N Suryanarayan, said when quizzed about the Carnival parade on Saturday. CARNIVAL IN CALANGUTE: Community Carnival celebrations, different from those held in the State, began on February 21 in Calangute with the King Momo, Al-Noor Shamshuddin Lakhnoor, declaring the festivities open and urging the people to have fun, fancy and fiesta over the next four days. On Tuesday, a Carnival Parade-float competition-would be held from 5 pm from Kamat Holiday Homes to Calangute football ground, said the organizing committee member. (H) UK PATIENT'S BACK HEALED IN 9-HOUR SURGERY: In what could be described as a path-breaking orthopaedic surgical procedure in the State, a team of senior surgeons and anaesthetists successfully conducted a major spinal surgery on Carol Killinary, a 63-year-old UK national, at the Apollo NUSI Hospitals and Research Centre, Cuncolim, recently. An earlier surgery conducted two years ago in the United Kingdom on Carol to solve the same problem, was not of much help. The grueling 9-hour surgery enabled her to turn around on her hospital bed the very next day, something she was unable to do for the major portion of the last two years. Bismark Martins, the CEO of Apollo NUSI, stated that while the surgery performed would cost the UK patient 15,000 pounds almost Rs.12 lakh in Indian currency, the same was carried out at just Rs.2.5 lakh. Immigration police on Feb 20 intercepted 43-year-old Sandra Duia Amarawathie Silva, and her accomplice, Ravi Thermalingam, who tried to board a Kuwait-bound flight at the Dabolim airport with a fake Sri Lankan passport. (H) "GOYCHEM NOKETR-PADRE ZUZE VAZ": A Konkani musical drama on the life of Blessed Joseph Vaz entitled "Goychem Noketr-Padre Zuze Vaz", written and directed by Fr Robin Rodrigues, was staged at the Sanctuary of Blessed Joseph Vaz, Sancoale, recently. The drama had a perfect Goan setting wherein almost 50 young devotees drawn from all over Goa acted.
