Fred asked: Am I wrong in believing that the US perspective on home-schooling is quite different from the one described at Vasco? While the latter is based on a critique of what the straight-jacketed educational system does to our kids, home-schooling in the US is significantly a reaction to what conservative Christians see as a way to combat "secularisation" of the educational system. More details would be appreciated.... FN
Fred: While I am not aware what the Vasco perspective on homeschooling is, people in the USA homeschool for a variety of reasons, amongst them being, philosophical, medical and religious. For some it may be one reason alone, for others a combination of reasons. For us, it was a combination of religious reasons, the failure of public schools to 'deliver' in basic educational skills, the huge problem with drugs, alcohol, teen sex, racial bigotry (that is still prevalent in some areas) in schools and also our desire to see our children excel academically and creatively. Homeschooling research and statistics have proven beyond a doubt ( to us at least) that it is the best edcational option currently available to us.
