CHURCHILL IS CONG CANDIDATE: The Congress High Command is learnt to have
finalised the candidature of former MP Churchill Alemao for the Mormugao
(South Goa) Parliamentary constituency and its option is open for a tie-up
with secular parties for the Panaji (North Goa) seat during the forthcoming
Lok Sabha polls. (GT)

NORTH GOA SEAT TO MGP: The All India Congress Committee has tentatively
agreed to offer the North Goa seat to the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party,
party sources said. (H)

STRIKE HITS BANKING, INSURANCE SERVICES: Thousands of workers employed in
various sectors and establishments in Goa participated in the one-day
nation-wide general strike on February 24 under the banner of the All India
Trade Union Congress, to affirm the "Right to Strike" and against the
anti-working class policies pursued by the Government. (GT)

REVELRY MARKS MAPUSA CARNIVAL: Huge crowds welcomed the Carnival parade
amidst revelry and a festive mood among all the residents at Mapusa. In all,
52 floats in various categories participated in the parade. A replica of the
"Skybus" presented by Canico Friends Circle of Bardez, "Golden Fish" by
Friends Circle of Mapusa and "Different uses of the Coconut tree" by Navelim
youth drew applause from the crowds. (GT)

REMIX QUEEN HAS CROWD, OFFICIALS SPELLBOUND: The tree-day Carnival
festivities organised by the Margao Carnival Committee culminated late on
February 24 evening with a live performance by remix queen Vaishali Samant
at the Ravindra Bhavan Site. Vaishali started with the Konkani number "Undir
mama ailo", receiving applause from the crowd. (H)

ARRESTED UNDER SOUND ACT: Calangute Police arrested one Joseph Coutinho for
playing loud music at his bar and restaurant without securing permission
from the competent authority, on February 23 night. He was later released on
bail. (H)

MAPUSA WILL BE DEVELOPED ALONG PANAJI LINES: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar
Parrikar, has said that the development and beautification of Mapusa would
be taken up on the lines of development in Panaji and the whole process
would be completed before Christmas. Parrikar was speaking at the foundation
stone laying of the construction of Rs.68 lakh parallel bypass road at
Khorlim Mapusa on February 24. (NT)

REVENUE LOST: Non-levy of excise duties and taxes in a few cases due to
various reasons resulted in a loss of substantial revenue for the government
during the financial year ending in March 2002, according to the Comptroller
and Auditor General of India report for the year 2001-2002. Though the
revenue of the excise department increased by 18.34 per cent during 2002 as
compared to 2000-2001, this was mainly due to an increase in excise duty on
various types of liquor and hike in fee for manufacture of liquor, wholesale
and increase on retail licences. (GT)

after being hit by a train at Pedda in Margao. (GT)

WAYS TO KEEP THIEVES AWAY: South Goa superintendent of police Indra Dev
Shukla held a meeting with bungalow owners from Amrutnagar, Mutt and
Vidyanagar areas in Margao on February 24, and discussed various ways of
avoiding house breaking thefts around their residential areas. Shukla
informed that he urged those present for the meeting to initiate community
policing and to keep police informed of door-to-door salesmen, suspicious

MORMUGAO TOPS IN ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS: The maximum number of illegal
constructions, 2,398, are in Mormugao taluka while Sancoale in the same
taluka takes the cake for the most number (1,490 of unauthorized structures.
Minister for Panchayati Raj Manohar Azgaonkar in a written reply to MLA
Matanhy Saldanha stated that are 4,856 cases of illegal structures in
panchayat areas. (GT)

TO MONITOR CABLE TV NETWORK: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,
New Delhi, has directed the State government to deal sternly with cable
television operators in the State showing programmes of foreign channels
which were reported to be offensive to good taste and decency and were
likely to affect public morality. (GT)

GOA POPULATION IN 2011: Goa's population is likely to cross the 15.5 lakh
mark by 2011 from 13.68 lakh in 2002. While Goa had registered a population
growth of 14.89 per cent during 1911-2001, there may not be a significant
change during this decade. Accordingly, the State population will increase
at an average of 19,000 plus every year. (GT)

EDC SET TO BREAK EVEN: The Economic Development Corporation Limited is
expected to break even in the current financial year, despite having
suffered a loss of about Rs.12 crore last year. Last year the Corporation
had recovered interest of Rs.22 crore, while this year the figure has
already touched Rs.32 crore. (GT)

FRIDAY BALCAO: The fortnightly discussion event on February 27 from 4 pm to
6 pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre, Mapusa, will discuss the co-operative
movement in Goa and the new legislation. The discussion will be led by
Shashikant Punaji, vice chairman of the Pernem Taluka Farmers Co-operative
Society and editor of "Sahakar Goa", a monthly magazine on co-operatives and
agriculture. (H)

SCIENCE FIESTA: Goa Science Centre, Miramar, and the Department of Science,
Technology and Environment will jointly organise "Science Fiesta 2004" at
Miramar, from 26 to 28 February, to commemorate the National Science Day.

PAINTINGS EXPO AT KA: An exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Praveen
Naik, Vasudev Shetye, Devidas Bhat and Gopal Kudaskar will be on display
from 26 to 28 February at the Art Gallery of the Kala Academy, Panaji. All
four artists are alumni of the Goa College of Art. (GT)

COLACO TOPS MBA EXAM: Ms Ruhee Colaco has been awarded a Gold Medal for
standing first at the Master of Business Administration examination held at
Goa University in April 2003. Ms Colaco is a resident of Sasmolem-Baina. She
received the medal at the hands of Governor of Goa and Vice Chancellor of
Goa University, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, at the 16th Annual Convocation held at
Kala Academy, Panaji, on February 14. (NT)
