It could have been a fox or possibly some other member
of the canidae, I've seen one and more often heard it
upto the '80s. A pesky chicken lifter and a howler. 

any information on the porcupine ? Konkani salandor (=
barbed rat) ? this animal's name sometimes turns up in
the etymology of Saligaon.
