Apollo NUSI Hospital at Panzorkoni � Cuncolim Salcete Goa has added another
feather to its cap in the history of Goa by performing rare spinal surgery,
a real pathbreaking orthopaedic surgery.
A 63 years old lady patient from United Kingdom name Carol Killiner, was not
able to walk properly, nor sit or even sleep. She was diagonizing for almost
2 years back home in London.
The grueling nine-hour long surgery was conducted by specialist in spinal
surgery was 100 percent successful. This lady patient was now able to turn
around on her hospital bed the very next day � something she was unable to
do for the last two years. It is just a miracle for Carol Killiner, she
said.
The procedure which was conducted to achieve �global� stabilization of two
adjacent vertebrae, after clearing the entire disc space of remnants from
the previous surgery. The surgery for a �failed back� involved inserting two
expandable spinal implants or spinal cages into the vertebral disc space
while taking care not to damage the spinal cord or other sensitive organs
around the vertebrae, thus obtaining global fusion and stability.
Aided by demand, a technical set of surgical instruments, the innovative
B-Twin expandable spinal system and a C-arm to continually monitor the
progress, the surgeons inserted the spinal implant into the prepared
intervertebral space in a reduced configuration of 5mm dia. When ideally
positioned with the intervertebral space, the implant was then expanded to a
13mm x 11mm configuration.
It is worth to perform such a cheap surgery in Goa without going outside to
foreign countries at a cost of Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
According to my knowledge, Apollo NUSI Hospital is one of the forefronts of
pioneering surgical procedures in Goa. I have experienced during my last
visit in the year 2002. The total knee joint replacement surgery and
operations in the chest cavity are the few examples. Besides these,
innovative laparoscopic procedures such as Fundao Plication and endoscopic
surgery for varicose veins were conducted at the hospital last year.
