GOA GOES TO POLLS ON 26 APRIL: Goa will go for polls in the second phase of parliamentary elections scheduled on 26 April 2004, while results will be declared on 13 May. The last date for filing nominations in Goa is 7 April, while scrutiny of application will be done on 8 April 2004. The last date for withdrawal is 10 April. Sanjeet Rodrigues is the Officer on Special Duty during the parliamentary poll process to be held in Goa. When contacted on 29 February, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said his government and party were fully prepared to face the polls, and that the propaganda had already begun at an informal level. DABOLIM AIRPORT EXPANSION: A positive signal seems to be emerging with the setting up of the inter-ministerial committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Defence functionaries, with regard to the acquisition of additional land for the proposed expansion of the Dabolim International Airport. LIFTING OF CIVIL FLIGHT CURBS: In an effort to balance an increase in air traffic and limited time made available to civilian flights, the Airport Authority of India has suggested that day time rest5riction should be lifted in order to avoid noon time congestion. At present, airlines arrive and depart either from 6 am to 8.30 am and from 1 pm to 6 pm. (H)

�DEVELOP KONKANI�: Chief Secretary DS Negi speaking at a function of the 12th Konkani Natyamahotsav in Bicholim, appealed to all Konkani lovers to make utmost efforts to develop Konkani literature. On this occasion, he released two volumes of the book �Samagra Shenoi Goembab�. (GT)

TO CURB SPURIOUS DRUGS: The Federation of Medical & Sales Representatives Association of India has said stringent laws, including death penalty, would alone not help in curbing spurious drugs unless the government shows the will to take on the manufacturers head on. FMRAI general secretary, DP Dubey, quoted World Health Organisation�s report which says that 35 per cent of the drugs in India are spurious. �Such is the extent that only Nigeria follows India with 23 per cent spurious drug market,� he said. THIEVES DECAMP WITH ORNAMENTS: Unidentified persons entered into a house belong to Bruno Carvalho of Dando, Goa Velha, on 29 February and stole gold ornaments worth Rs.60,000. (GT)

VASCO TOO PREPARES FOR EXPOSITION: When mega events such as the exposition at Old Goa and the International Film Festival are scheduled in the State later this year, the port town has its own role to play as it has the unique advantage of having access to all modes of transport�air, sea, road and rail. Marmagoa Municipal Council chairman Milton Barretto proposed some major civic amenity projects and ward development proposals, that he claimed would make the Vasco a model town in the State. (H)

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND QUALITY: The Economic Survey 2003-04 shows that the bank deposits in Goa are reaching Rs.11,000 crore. Of these, only 30 per cent are NRI deposits. The rest of the wealth does not correspond to economic activities captured under SDP using the standard formula of 14 sector approach. As a national policy, the SDP measures only the overground or official wealth and the acceptable, legal economic activity. It does not indicate the actual affluence in out state. There is no mechanism to verify the economic activity which has led to the phenomenal incremental accretion of these deposits. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT)

GOAN CINEMA: Goa is going to be the venue for the country�s international film festival. Are we going to be only pleasant hosts, or do we mean to show to the world that we Goans deserve to be the hosts because we can also make films that are of international standard? Goans are cosmopolitans, yes, but are we cosmopolitan in cinematic achievement? The government should think; the Goan film makers should think; the Goan businessmen should think; the Goans at large should think. (Edit in NT)

SANGOLDA FARMER�S GROUNDNUT FARMING: A farmer in Sangolda is set to harvest a bigger yield of groundnut crop in Goa, using plastic effectively as a cover to prevent loss of moisture from the soil. There is no need for irrigation even for three months after sowing. Groundnut and pulses have been grown in Goa since the early seventies on residual soil moisture without irrigation. However, farmers often suffer losses due to a high mortality of seeds. (GT)

GUTKA SEIZED: Police at the Pollem check post seized a vegetable truck smuggling gutka and tobacco worth Rs.56,000 into the State. During the three-hour search, which involved unloading the vegetables, the police found the contraband laid at the bed of the truck. (GT)

POETS HIGHLIGHT ROAD SAFETY: Marga Abhiyan organized a multi-lingual poets� meet to highlight the issue of road safety and to create an awareness among people at a programme held at the Government College of Arts and Commerce, Pernem. Renowned Konkani poet Nagesh Karmali presided over the meet. (GT)

FURNITURE MAKING IN BENAULIM: Besides being blessed with professional artistes on Konkani stage, the village of Benaulim is also a cradle for furniture works. This village in South Goa has a chain of professional carpenters. And the age-old tradition of carpentry, which was carried out over the years by the ancestors in the family, is still continued by their kith and kin today. (Pio Esteves in NT)

DISTINGUISHED AUTHOR AWARD: Internationally renowned Goan, Dr Uday Barad, has added another feather to his cap. He has won the prestigious �Distinguished Author 2004� award for two of the four books written by him. And, with this award, Dr Barad has become the first Indian to write four books on pharmaceutical technology in a single academic year 2003; to publish all these books from USA for global sales; to get international acclaim as Distinguished Author 2004; to be selected globally as best author on pharmaceutical technology and to be appointed on Special Task Force Project in USA.
